Teens compete with adults for summer jobs

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Teenagers who lined up in beige folding chairs at a Six Flags amusement park job fair last month continually repeated the gripe: The hunt for summer work is brutal. Teens across the nation are facing a similar plight: They need summer jobs for car insurance, college funds and spending money, but the prospects are bleak. Six Flags says it has seen more adult applicants this year.

Oh yea? Well you have big ears! ;)

Big ears? Hah! Those ears would give Dumbo a run for his peanuts! :)

I work with both adults and teens. I also work with a LOT of slackers. I see people older than me text messaging their friends when they should be working. I am not perfect but at least I work.

Teens get a bad reputation. I am not saying they are all responsible and hard-working. Slackers come in all ages. :) I am in a temp job right now where we are remodeling a store. It's a LOT of physical labor. There's a lot of heavy lifting, moving stuff around, and literally getting dirt and dust all over you. I don't mind it. I think of it as getting paid as well as getting a free workout. :)

I am 37 years old and have a bad back. I don't complain. I work with people (of all ages) who are in BETTER shape than me but whines and complains about everything, even if it's lifting a 2 lb. box. People can be such wusses. God forbid you tell it to their faces. ;)

I don't get it. If the job is too much then they should quit instead of standing around complaining that they might break a nail or miss a text message.

Like I said slackers come in ALL ages.

Agreed, Tina.

Wait. Your how old? You don't look a day over 25.

^^ I second that opinion Tina.

I used to work at a butcher shop, working out back in the cooler doing prep work for our store. plus nine others. I was lifting cases and bin of meat & chicken weighing between 40-80 lbs all day. It was a running joke around the place:

"Body by Meat House"

I already seconded Tina's opinion, Hopman. You actually thirded it...lol

Whatever. for once, we ALL agree on something.

Now, which park is better? CP or SFMM???? :) That should stir the pot a bit.

I agree with Tina as well.

NOTE TO TEENS: think out of the box this summer. By that I mean, check local cemetaries for grounds keeping jobs, auto dealerships for car washing jobs. Also consider trying at garden centers and farms.

^I couldn't agree more. One of my first jobs as a kid was mowing lawns. That's perfect for any kid. You don't need a work permit and you always get paid in cash, which is always awesome. ;)

Thanks, LK. :) Anytime I get carded (which is rare but still happens) it totally makes my day. :)

There's always the old standby: LEMONADE STAND!!!

Of course, that's until the city board of health shuts it down for not being licenced and inspected. :)

My 14-year-old cousin Chase washes cars for a dealership. At $15 per car, he makes a killing.

^WOW! That sure beats McD's and WalMart. I didn't know they'd make that much.

Forget teens being slackers...they are cheaper for sure!
