Talon continues to rise over Allentown

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Winter can be such an ugly time for coaster enthusiasts who don't live in Southern California or Florida. The fine folks at Dorney have been nice enough so far to offer us a play-by-play of the construction of Talon, their new inverted B&M coaster. God bless Walter, Claude and the Internet.

Check out the construction photos on the official Dorney Park site.

I suppose they'll repaint it?

Actually, it's my understanding that they've figured out this whole fading paint thing. I know they were telling me at Cedar Point about the paint used on Millennium Force, and how it's supposedly resistant to fading.

What has always struck me about the paints used on B&M's is that it's so flat. I would think, perhaps incorrectly, that glossy paint would reflect more light.

Jeff- while we are on the ol' subject of CP again, do you know if Mantis and Maggie will get a repaint?
Steel Force got repainted this year just to let everyone know. Also, the loop should be finished this upcoming week. If you ask me, the work being done on this coaster is at a rampant pace. It wasn't too long ago that the field in the webcam was all dirt, with one pillar standing up. It did get me excited to see that one pillar then though. Long live Talon and Dorney!
Who thinks they are going to ride this beast? Im going there for ACE COASTERCON 2001. Anyone else going to that?
I'll probably get to Dorney next year. As of right now, I believe I will. But, of course, something could always stop that.

Serial Thriller is an SLC, not inverted. I don't know if Face/Off is classified as an SLC or as an inverted coaster, but I'd be inclined to think of it more as an SLC, as it's made by the same company, Vekoma. S:UE is an Intamin, of course, but I don't know if they call their creations "inverted" or not. I believe they do.

How dare you vanquish the Steel Phantom without his consent? Fear the Phantom's Revenge.
Has anyone else heard of a rumured Hidden element to for this ride that isnt on the drawings? I t would sorta make sense cause of that whole thing with Dorney releasing the drawings so early, maybe they did that tho throw people of gaurd.

The hidden element simply came from the parks website. In the first set of pictures released for the new ride, the was a shot of the footer for the immelmann. The site is quoted as saying that it is a "surprise element." Now you can make what you want of this, but I am sticking with the idea that they mean it will be simply that, surprising to go through an immelmann. Based on the footer and steel plans they have released, the construction up to this point, and close ties to those working/documenting the erection of Talon, I can honestly say we would know something is up with it. But you do have your right to wish!
I might go to Coaster-Con. I know I'm going to No-Coaster-Con.
I LIVE in Allentown area, and I go to Dorney Park almost every season. I really miss the old rides (Journey to Center of Earth, Meteorite ex-Iceberg, etc.)though. Cedar Fair has absolutely no respect for history. Those rides were irreplaceable. I like HalloWeekends, though.
They might not have any respect for history, but they sure do know how to manage a park. Did you ever begin to think that maybe those rides were not meeting the standards of the numerous safety boards? Or that they simply were not that functional anymore? I know the Iceberg was the last of its kind in operation, so that probably means parts were hard to come by. Since running an amusement park is a business, I can clearly see why Cedarfair has made each move. I commend them on making Dorney Park a modern and fun place to visit. I have worked there for five seasons, had a season pass for several years before that, and never complain about the changes it has been through. You should be happy that a good owner came and bought out such a wonderful park. Dorney would have by no means flourished to the extent it did with Cedarfair. Their financial backing helped give DP Steel Force, which really got the ball rolling. As for your comment about HalloWeekends, I like it too. I gets better each year as well. I hope to see Dorney and Cedarfair continue to work together, because in my opinion they have created one of the best amusement parks in the Northeast. Thats my say!
Dorney Park says, "Talon is the Northeast's FIRST inveted coaster!" in the advetisement on their website. What about Batman:The Ride or The Mind Eraser's at SFNE,SFDL, and SFA?
Actually, it says Talon is, "Dorney Parks first world class inverted coaster"
First Drop done opening day is coming soon. That looks like a good drop to me
