Talk about airtime!

Yes I have ridden Ghostrider in the last seat... But I wasn't standing up on my feet... Only way for this guy to be up so high is for a lap bar that isn't snug and secure...

But that picture is something a safety activist would look at as gold....

I also know that on the Big Dipper at SFWOA, that you will be standing many a times from that things airtime.

Actually there are a number of coasters that *will* give you that much airtime, even on the first drop. People tend to forget that the Cyclone @ CI has one of the steepest drops on a woodie (something like 60?) so I wouldn't say it's out of the realm of possibility for someone to come out of their seat that much.

I agree that people who purposefully try to get of their restraints can make the community look bad but in the front or back seat of an air-laden woodie (or Steelie for that matter) I'd tend to give people the benefit of a doubt as I've been on rides like Phoenix, the Cornball @ IB, the Riverside Cyclone, Minebuster @ PCW (before the buzz removal/reprofiling) and their ilk which *do* force you up against the lap bar that far whether you try to stop it or not.

Anyone who has seen that picture and criticised the man, have you ever rode the coney island cyclone? I have and I dont think the man is standing but since the drop is so powerfull all you have to do is put ur hands up real high and kinda streach back into the seat a bit and you will defintaly pop out of ur seat the same way that guy in the picture is.As for the poor girl crouched undernear the lapbar like that i feel sorry for her becuase she must have gotten banged up real bad.And i cant forget the guy in the back of the GC,dose he even have is lapbar down? and did he make it out of the ride alive? that is beyoung air time but its 1sec from being flug from the train.

In the back I could believe it but that guy is in the front seat.   You have no momentem in the front going over the first drop as shown.
I have ridden many a coaster that gives you stand up airtime in the back,  Raven, ST, Riverside Cyclone, Thunder Run, Villain, Cornball to name a few,  Also I want to add that Ratcheting restraints tend not to keep you in a seated possition.  Your body straigtens out under them.
I just don't believe that that is airtime on the front seat pic,  I know of very few coasters that give airtime on the first drop.  Millie only gives a hint in the front and it is 87*.
Chuck, who has seen people standing on many a coasters first drop.

I've seen a number of people stand up involuntarily on their first ride on the Phoenix.  More or less did it myself.  The air time is so enormous that it catches you off guard the first time.  (No seat belts on the Phoenix.).
Sorry, but i found those pics more humorous than anything else.  :)

On one of, if not the most intense night ride I've ever had on Magnum, the airtime I got as the on-ride photo was being taken was pretty extreme. My head was all the way at the top of the photo, and it's looked like I was standing. I could see that Buck is getting airtime, but the one on the Cyclone looks like he wants to end up in the newspaper obituary

I've never ridden the CI Cyclone, but I have ridden back seat of the Georgia Cyclone.  Personally, I was lifted out of my seat to a standing position.  Actually due to the tightness of the seat divider, I had trouble fully sitting back down.  If you've never ridden a ride, you can't say for certain that's it's not airtime.

I also wonder why people are calling these people jerks, yet complement the videos of people who (against the rules) smuggle a camera onto a ride.

Those suprise backseat Ga Cyclone rides:). You can ride all day, get in for one last ride, and you just can't get seated right again after the first drop. That's the only wooden, ratchet-bar type restrainted ride that's made me hold on for dear life. It doesn't matter that the seatbelt's there, either!

Well....I, for one, disagree with all of you.  Yes, it does look odd, to say the least, but I have looked at that picture many times, and again today, I can say that he is NOT standing up.  Go ahead, call me an idiot too, tell me I am blind, but I think that is just one HUGE dude, with big, freakin' long arms, and he is just in heaven.  Granted, he looks like he is about 1 second from flying out of the train, but I think it is the angle of the pic as well.  Oh, and one more thing...he is riding in the front seat, and this is the first drop.  He is not experiencing airtime (yet).

...now I will probably be banned from the site for contributing to the deliquency of an idiot...

I think I'll get banned now...
Has anyone stopped to think that it is almost impossible to completely stand up on a rollercoaster drop that steep, without coming out of the train? Take a closer look at that picture, he is NOT standing. Rather, he is getting *stand up* air by riding with a loose lap bar. In the first photo, look at the girl behind the guy appearing to stand. In the second photo, you can even see Buck's lap bar which is pretty high, but clearly covering his legs.

Wow, I'd hate to face some of you as jurors, you'd convict based on a first look at a photo. ;)

I concur with DWeaver here.  I have experienced this kind of air on Cyclops at the Wisconsin Dells and on that ride you have NO control as to lap bar height because the car has a single shared lap bar that doesnt ratchet down.(I think the term is buzz bars, but I could be wrong on that).  Anyways, on the last drop I am practically standing everytime I ride it.  It happens.  As the caption in the photo says, the guy isnt purposely trying to stand.  I have to agree with that statement.  Alot of you get on your high horses when you see something like this and preach to the world "THOU SHALT NOT STAND ON A ROLLER COASTER!" without even knowing the facts.  I wholeheartedly agree that standing on a coaster is VERY VERY wrong, but these two were obviously experiencing airtime as stated in the post header.  Airtime is good!

I'd have to add that the freeform style that the guy on the Cyclone is riding with could also be a big contributor to the air.

The amount your body actually moves around can have a lot to do with *how* you're riding. Putting your arms completely out like that and letting your body go limp instead of bracing yourself will go a long way in getting insane air....I know on BKF in the back seat I try to ride with my body completely limp and the drop off the block is enough to yank my legs up hard and pull me off my seat against the restraints violently which is much different than the sensation you'll get if you're actually bracing yourself mildly...the same holds true for pretty much any coaster.

Y'know airtime is great I'll never downplay that.. but someone like ED Markey see's a pic like this, and he'll have a field day... Enthusiast wanna protect rides from OTSR's and they're out pulling stunts like this... since when have enthusiast or a park said, "It's okay to have your hands outside the train, to brace yourself."

I've had my share of airtime, I know the score; but taking pictures of someone pulling a stunt like this is ignorant! And shows that some enthusiast can't even abide by the rules.. so why listen to people who could care less?

-----------------
It's conflict that shows who a person really is!

i know bill, and he is a big guy (about 6'4"), and he probably had the lap bar only a couple clicks down. he is holding on,so he's not technically standing. ride the phoenix or the jack rabbit at kennywood and your shins will be above the lap-bar if you're not careful.
