SW5 gets a name from its creator

Scheduled to open in May 2002 at Alton Towers, the coaster code-named SW5, or Secret Weapon 5, will be called AIR, according to the designer, John Wardley. The coaster will be B&M's first attempt at a "flying" coaster where riders will ride horizontally below the track.

The name "AIR" has too much attitude to it, in my opinion. "X" isn't that cool either. The only "X" should be the band X. Maybe they'll play at media day :> Unlikely.

Ow! My lap bar IS down all the way.
How about Superman: The AIR Coaster, or Batman: AIR Flight, or better still AIRarang.

May/June 2001 - 16 parks in 18 days!!!
How about this:

The two stations are side by side on the plans; hard to switch trains from one station to the next. What if the trains race on one track (two tracks back to back) with one train on its back while the other is inverted and vice versa throughout the ride.

Just a thought... *** This post was edited by scenic on 5/18/2001. ***
The name AIR sound stupid, and the layout looks pretty boring, come on , John Wardley, you are working with B&M, I expected to see cool inversions and stuff, not just a drop and 3 helixes!! I would honestly prefer to ride Stealth or X-Flight that AIR, even if they are Vekomas.

PS. Vekomas coasters are great, its just that I like B&Ms more
AIR could work well. It must stand for something and depending on what it is that is stands for will determine whether or not it is a GREAT name. Also, if Alton Towers does their usual great job of building superb rides with fantastic themeing I sure we will all be able to overlook the name if it's not that great.

Now on the other hand I dont' care for the name X at all. Maybe if they chosen this name 5 or 6 years ago it wouldn't be so bad but everybody during the 90s incorporated X or Extreme into their product names so that they would appeal to the coveted teen - 30s demographic. We are now at the end of that trend which means that this name will become outdated very quickly.

Classic names are much better for something that is expected to be around for many many years.

Yeah, what's the deal with SFMM calling themselves the Xtreme Park. That is so lame!
Yeah, if we could get more classic names like, Big Dipper, Cyclone, Comet, ahh forget it, let just go real old school and call it coaster.

At the very least we could name it something that doesnt capitalize on the latest trends; how about Millennium Force?

Does any one know where I could find pictures of
"Air" ?????????????
And is it simuler any to Vekoma's Flying Dutchman ?????????????
Actually, once X opens it will be called, X:The Forth Dimension. Very cool!

But anyway, people said MF had a boring layout as well, but they were wrong, and they'll be wrong here to.
It keeps you alive...
You've felt it brush past you...
You've even seen it blown around objects like they were children's toys....
NOW..... ALTON TOWERS GIVES YOU THE CHANCE TO RIDE IT!

AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's similar, only the whole layout is like that of an Inverted. You're in the flying position the whole time except in the station.

www.sw5online.com Has 3D renderings. It's hard to see - it looks like AIR might have one Flat Spin before the brakes. Remember this is mainly guesswork.
