SW5 gets a name from its creator

Posted | Contributed by MPD47

Scheduled to open in May 2002 at Alton Towers, the coaster code-named SW5, or Secret Weapon 5, will be called AIR, according to the designer, John Wardley. The coaster will be B&M's first attempt at a "flying" coaster where riders will ride horizontally below the track.

I don't like the name quite as well as Nemesis or Oblivion.

There are currently 11 coasters with the name Batman, 8 with the name Superman and 22 with the name Boomerang. Batman and Superman: The Ultimate Chiller Knight Flight Krypton Escape Ride.
Word is the name is just initials as it's all caps.

My suggestion; AIR = Aerobatic Inverting Rollercoaster

That what I was thinking, as well. The acronym you posted works pretty well, too.

We'll see when they make a formal announcement.

Have you Noticed, they haven't named the ride, Air, but AIR?

Which probably means it's Taipan's theroy!
Perhaps it will all make sense at the official announcement. the theming will perhaps make it more sensiful.

I like how the name is still 3 letters. Easy to say, easy to type.

I agree with just about everyone above. "AIR" could stand for something like HyperSonicXLC....Xtreme Launch Coaster. Don't know what "AIR" could stand for though.

SFGAm: SCREAM. THRILL. REPEAT. Two New Coasters in 2001!
Well, firstly I just want to say whoever sent in this news is wrong about the ride opening in May 2002, as it is definatly opening March 2002, wherever did he get May from???

Next, I believe this is just a codename and not the real name, Come on, can you really imagine people turning to each other and saying, Hey lets go and ride AIR, It just dosnt work, It clearly must stand for something, but what I dont know, Prehaps AeroBatic Inverted RollerCoaster or something.

About six months ago I would have said the same thing about "X", "Nitro" and "Cornball Express" all sort of silly sounding names, but true names nevertheless.

Yeah the name AIR is pretty pathetic... even worse than X.
Well they certainly haven't lived up to their previous names... Nemesis, Oblivion were creative! AIR? AIR?! Why not call it dirt. Or sand...

I have to agree!!
I think that X is a cool name and origional. However, I think that AIR is stupid! I like SW5 better than AIR and that's just what the park calls it not even anything official. I think of Michael Jordan for some reason when I hear AIR!

Wait a minute, wait a minute... You think X is cool and original?! Oh yes, letters are so creative.

I'm sure the ride will suck because it has a less than awesome name(rolling eyes), my goodness you guys are picky. And yes, X is a great name, as mysterious as the ride itself, it's perfect.

Too much is simply NOT ENOUGH...
I honestly don't like that name. But I am certain that the ride will easily overcome that. :) Who cares about the name, its the ride that counts. I think X is a good name. Perhaps not creative, but fits the ride well.
