Superman Ride Of Steel #1 Coaster On The Planet?

Six Flags New England has a lot to brag about because they got a great coaster thats well worth the wait. Superman has been voted #1 coaster on the planet? Personally I loved Superman because of the height, length and its wonderful surroundings. S.R.O.S is not the tallest fastest or longest on the planet but its a real contender for that top spot. Look For My SFNE review on June 28 2002.

Boy am I lucky. I'm going at opening hour this Wensday. With the kids still in school up here in Massachusetts and on a weekday, this will be a chillin' day.

Voted #1 by whom? I'm not disagreeing, just curious.

A coaster well worth the wait? Well, considering I waited 2hrs. for it to open this morning, and then another 1.5 hrs for a second trip, it's getting a lot closer to the threshold. Really really want that red train.

Vertigo: I'll be there on Wed. too. Meet?

AC?, RB?, MF?, DD?, PR? Who can keep track of it all?

If it has got MF beat than it is really something to brag about. It did look like a awsome coaster from the POV footage I saw of it on Robb Alveys Coaster Footage. The seating in the trains looks truely unique for some reason.

I believe it won the Golden Ticket Award for the #1 steel coaster the year it debuted.

No, the #1 in the World ranking is based on Park World magazine's rating of it (aka: the opinion of Paul Reuben)

Coasters debuting in the Golden Tickets rarely finish very high because of the early season balloting, as a result SROS @ SFNE finished 9th (I think...) in it's first season of operation and finished 2nd last year being narrowly edged by Millennium.

It's important to note that the Golden Tickets, while much more reliable than the opinion of one man or the Discovery shows, are far from perfect because the popular coaster that has had more riders (in this case MF) is going to win out over the more isolated installation...therefore you'll rarely see foreign coasters like Tonnere de Zeus or Expedition Ge-Force getting the rating that they deserve which makes the process flawed IMHO.

That's the reason I'll continue to believe that the only truly reliable polls are the ones run by Mitch Hawker as they rate based on head to head comparisons by people who've ridden them both, by far the most reliable method around.

the seating on the train isnt anything unique, its the same exact thing as the seating on MF. the lap bars are geat though, becuase if the ride ops dont staple you then the gs will never force it down anymore, it stays ptretty rigid unless forced.

however, i do not think that it is better than MF, I just found MF to be more thrilling and overall more fun. S:ROS is a great ride (a not so distant second) but i just liked MF better for reasons i dont know. To tell the truth, the first time i rode it was the third week it was open and before all the hype had gathered (also before i had been to cedar point or on any other great coasters save those at SFGrAdv) and i left the train very dissapointed. it did give airtime, but it didnt give that awsome feeling (you know guys, where your balls start to tingle and such...) so i left the train very dissapointed.

It wasnt until i returened from CP that i rode it again, this time in the back seat, and that certain feeling was abundant throughout the entire ride, and the g's were alot better in the helixes. It was a much different, and better, experience.

Now i am a huge fan of airtime though, so i can ride anywhere and come off extremely happy...but back then it was nothing more than my first hyper.

I have ridden them both and would have tgo disagree. I believe MF Beats it out for number 1. Superman is my number 4 behind Nitro and Hypersonic.

Guys, lets not turn this nto a number 1 coaster debate.

I don't think that Mitch Hawker's poll is the most accurate because the only people that vote are the ones that take their time deciphering it. If he formatted it as a fill in the bubble and add your comments poll it would be much more accurate. MF just to number 2 in its first year and then 1 in its second year which is phenominal. With that said, I don't expect it to be at the top for very much longer...and that's great! That means we will know that better coasters are being built.

I really do want to ride S:ROS at SFNE sometime, but for some reason I don't see that happening for a long time...

Superman is fun but nobody can say that its better than the Millennium Force, what were they smoking?

I agree also!

Dayuum, Your HOT!

I think it deserves #1. It's Intamin's best layout, and it easily beats all other Intamin hypers out there. IMO it's a question of Superman SFNE/Raging Bull. Both layouts are outstanding. It's a really hard decision.

Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society-Chicago Chapter

I havn't ridden either, but it is hard to imagine it beating out MF. It is possible, but I just don't know.

-----------------
Go AVS!!! AVS will repeat!!!

I personally think it beats out MF by a long shot, MF just goes to fast to enjoy the ride and it doenst have that much airtime as I had imagined. SROS has wacky intense airtime, the restraints pretty much throw you back into your seat thats how intense it is. It is definitely Intamin's best creation and I hope they get that second train up soon before I head back later this year.

A lot of you think "oh S:RoS can be the best"

Maybe I'm in a minority but I had zero problems filling out Mitch's poll. The instructions are quite self-explanatory. Yes, it takes a little bit of work to make up a ballot but I'll happily take part in it as long as he continues to run it.

As per the MF #2 in the 2000 Golden Tickets and #1 in the 2001 edition, I agree, it's amazing. However, I still feel the "raw number of votes" method is inherently flawed because when you have a coaster like MF that's located centrally in the country and near a ton of other parks (aka: a destination state for enthusiasts) up against a coaster that's located in a more isolated area like New England it's going to be at a heavy disadvantage, and the more centrally located ride is going to win in most cases the way Amusement Today conducts their poll and I don't think that's right.

If you look at Mitch's 2001 Steel Poll and compare it to the Golden Tickets you see many of the same rides rank highly...MF is still up there at #3 behind SROS @ SFNE and Ex-Ge-Force but is no longer winning based on superior ridership...this is the essence of why the head-to-head ranking is the best way to go IMO.

The Hawker poll lets anyone vote but it *doesn't* allow someone who's only ridden Coaster Y say that it's better than Coaster Z, which is essentially what your traditional poll does.

This isn't meant to be a slam on the Golden Tickets...AT is very selective about who gets to fill out a survey (ie: they usually only let well-travelled enthusiasts take part and people who are well-travelled are much more likely to go out of their way to ride new installations, even when they are in isolated locations) and that really helps to keep things fair (as much as is possible with a traditional poll IMHO) but it still ends up hurting international coasters because very few people take trips to Europe, Asia, and so on.

I've ridden both and it would be hard to decide. Millennium Force's first hill is huge but MF lacks good elements after the drop if you ask me. I like Superman ROS aFter the drop. But I would have to give it to MF.
