Stratosphere Thrill Ride

The monorail will extend north of Bally's and stop at the Flamingo, Harrah's, Venetian, and continue on down Paradise Road and with stops at the Convention Center and the Las Vegas Hilton. It will end at the Sahara, and turn around and return up the strip and head south.

Theres also a rumor (it may actaully be proposed) That a 560' Observation Wheel called Voyager would be built near the MGM and Bellagio.

I thought there was some movement against the monorail extending down the strip because of the taxi drivers.....

The monorail is moving at a really good clip I drive past it everyday on my way out to school (UNLV) and it has grown tremendously.

They are building it mostly by building it in the middle of the street and along the sidewalk. The first station behind the Sahara hotel and Wet N Wild has its frame up already.

Also the Voyager is now rumored to be positioned where Wet N Wild is now.

The monorail is great for the casual tourist and older people. I think cabs are a bit high. I recenty rented a Dodge Neon for 6 days for only $127, and only used $10 in gas. In 97 when I made my first trip, it was $89 for one day's rental. Cabs are costly out there. Monorails are fun to most of us.

The cab drivers can complain all they want. People who cannot walk the entire strip also do not like paying the outrageous prices for taking a cab. And many people are not wise enough to know when they are being overcharged. Not that all cab drivers in Vegas do this, but we have had a few. A call to the taxi cab authority generally fixes the problem.

Part of the reason we stay at the Nugget is because there are more casinos in a short walking distance. When we do go to the strip, we take a cab and then use the trams. That is also why we rarely visit the Strat anymore. It's way too out of the way.

And my husband forwarded the monorail website with the route. Looks like it stops across from Circus Circus...a LONG block from the Strat.

That is about 6 long blocks.

Remember, a Vegas "block" is a lot bigger than your usual city block. I think what messes with you is perspective. Since the hotels are so honkin' large, the distances between them are big. But your brain still thinks in normal scale, so you see two hotels and don't think it's that far. When you actually walk it, however, you learn that there's quite a bit of distance from each hotel to the next.

The closest stop to the Strat is behind the Sahara Hotel and is the same distance from the Strat as it is from Circus Circus.

And yes our blocks vary a lot in size...for example the distance from Desert Inn to Spring Mountain...there is s 400 acre golf course/country club there so for us its a block when really its like 8 or 9.
