Stratosphere officials in Las Vegas are back before the city with plans for a shorter, 510-foot hook-shaped roller coaster. The ride would cross the street at 93 mph and climb another 325-foot tower. The new proposal will be handled by the planning commission then sent to council in April. The resort withdrew its plans in November when it was apparent that council would reject the plans for the larger ride.
Read more from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
I could easily hear the Viva Las Vegas, High Roller and Screams at the base of the tower and better from the Sahara(More in earshot) However it is 1000 ft in the air and hard to hear unless you have good hearing. My major points are the Loudspeakers for the jumbotron and the Interstate/Railroad wich as far as I was concearned can't make it that much more quiet than the rest of the Vegas Strip.(Besides Belagios Fountain, and Treasure Islands Show)
I know the stratosphere has been there for only ten years my point was to include that if they didn't want noise in this "quiet" section of Las Vegas they should have thought of this ten/twelve years ago.
Vegas thrives on Tourism shutting down the biggest thrillride in the world is a mistake!!!
Actually the loudest part of the stratosphere trip was that someone pulled the fire alarm while we were at the top. We got stuck listening to a deafening Alarm for a good 20 minutes until they could find and reset the alarm. And get the Elevators up and running again.

I wasn't implying that there are a lot of houses and apartments in that area, I was just trying to point out that they are CLOSER to LV Blvd near Stratosphere than on the south end of the strip.
I'd still rather see Stratosphere build a great coaster with that money than build a large drop ride.
How loud do you think this coaster is going to be anyways?
The loudest part of a roller coaster is the lift hill, and from what I remember, this thing is going to use a cable lift.

I know im exaduarting, but it is possible money wise with Strat. Anyway, back to the topic, dont forget that it still seems that the coaster cars will be enclosed, kind of defeting the purpose of a 400ft drop. They should take the indoor out of the design, then they got a ride with a real rush. If it was 700ft, yes enclose the coaster though.

John 9411: If it would be classified as a Roller Coaster, it wouldn't be Tera because it's 500 ft. not 400.
Why wouldn't be classified a rollercoaster? It's just as much a rollercoaster as S:TE. (and no I'm not trying to stir up that arguement). It will roll and coast on track - that makes it rollercoaster. It has more in common with a shuttle coaster than say an Itamin first generation freefall.

GO HUSKERS!
Not really tell me how this is any different then Mr. Hydes Nasty Fall, or Demon Drop? Your train is pulled up the lift and you are dropped down. Ya know? Only difference is that you face forward down instead of straight out.
Extend the brake run on a first Generation freefall to a hook like this ride has and you will have basically the same thing only on a smaller scale. This is a drop ride not a coaster.
As for it being a Tera coaster, A Hyper, Giga etc etc by definition is a full circuit noninverting coaster like Raging Bull, Millenium Force, SD2K etc etc. That is why S:TE isn't considered the first giga or even tera as it is 415 feet tall.

Does CCI know how to make a bad coaster?
Personally, I would much rather base jump off of the top of the tower itself than be on a drop ride / rollercoaster or whatever you want its name to be. Here's something. Why don't they build drop tower adjacent to the the tower itself that is just like Supreme Scream at Knott's? It wouldn't really be THAT much of an eyesore, plus it would only make the noise of the compressed air at the top. Even though that is nearly impossible, that still would be fun to think of.
Actually, I do believe a locomotive creates more noise than any coaster. My campus is built right next to a large trainline, with about 5 different tracks. Not only is their the noise of the engine, there is also the clickety clack of the metal wheels on the track. And on top of that, there is a high pitched squeel that you hear every time there is a turn, which is more irritating than even TOT or S:TE.
Another thing, why is everyone quick to call 400+ or 500+ rides a tera or whatever? I strongly doubt Intamin will call the 400ft breaker a Tera coaster. Firstly, it sounds stupid, it doesn't flow, no one would know what it means. Millennium Force wasnt a "Giga RollerCoaster" because of some computer-esque prefix system. Think about it - millennium, giga... they sort of go hand in hand. Now you'll lash back at me saying Intamin called their 200ft-ers Mega, so its sorta a pattern. I don't think they were called Mega for the true sense of it, more just "wow, thats one mega sized coaster!".
This probably isn't the place to discuss this, I just thought I should bring it up.

So what if the best coaster in Australia is a second hand Arrow?

I'm not saying it wouldn't be a rollercoaster, but some people may think it's not (like S:TE). But I definetly would call it a coaster.
The roller coaster 'Tera', 'Giga', and 'Mega' follow a mathematics pattern, don't they? so the next would be Peta.

These people can't argue that it is an eye sore because there are huge structures in the area.( hello, it's Las Vegas). Second, I have been to a few amusement parks, and when I am in the parking lot the only things I can hear are the lift hill. This thing will have cable lifts, which are fairly quiet, If I remember correctly. I do not see what the problem is. I have been to Vegas 2 times in the last 3 years, It's a loud city, I don't think they will hear this ride.
I DON'T SEE THE PROBLEM!!!

SFGAm 2003: B&M Flyer!?!?!
Vegas is certainly loud on the strip, but the Strat is much further from the main drag. Yes, there is also noise near the Strat. But, as mentioned above, the houses near the larger hotels on the main part of the strip are several blocks away. The houses near the Strat are right across the friggin street (Las Vegas Blvd). Remember, TWolf, there are 4 sides to the Strat. You said you were facing away from the strip, which tells me you didn't see the houses/apartments on the other side of the blvd. The noise from the rides on top of the Strat is barely audible, but a ride that crosses the blvd will be much noisier.
Think for a moment. Many people who live in Vegas work at the hotels and casinos. If you worked the graveyard shift, you'd be sleeping during the day (or trying to) when this ride would be getting its largest share of riders.
I would love to see this ride built. I would ride it. It would lure more people to that part of town. It would lure more developers as well. Pretty soon, that "dead space" between the main strip and the Strat could be filled with more hotels/casinos. Great for tourism. Bad for the people who have been living in those neighborhoods.
