Stratosphere faces residents opposed to giant coaster in Vegas

Posted | Contributed by Sampleman7

Stratosphere officials have spent six figures working with Arrow to see if it's feasible to build a coaster on the Las Vegas structure. They intend to pitch their plan to the planning commission despite opposition from surrounding residents.

well the neighbors know a ride is coming. so why dont they just sell their house now while no one knows about it. you get good money then just leave. then it just starts over but o well at least you dont have to worry about it. thats all i gotta say. also, with NOISE your in Las Vegas, like said by Den, there is commotion, talking, sreaming, cars, horns and bright lights. so if they are complaining about noise please give me a break.

Some of you really don't get it. "They should just move" is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard. How many times have you moved? I hated to do it twice a year while in college, and now I despise it with a whole house full of furniture. Moving is one of the single most stressful things you do in your life. Physically moving is only part of it, the other part is the attachment you have to your home. Home is very important to people, more than the physical property I'd be willing to bet.

None of you seem to get that when something like this goes up in your back yard, your house can be worth tens of thousands of dollars less. I for one expect to make a buck when it's time to move to another house. If someone wanted to put a shopping mall in my back yard or a roller coaster, I'd be pissed and do everything in my power to fight it.

Until you own your own home, stay out of the conversation because you don't have a single clue about what you're talking about.

It's Stratophere's land, so let them build what they want. When you move within a mile or two of the strip you know there will be expantion and lots of noise with it. Yes, I do understand that Stratophere is a lot farther away from the other hotels on the Blvd., but when people move to Vegas they must understand it is a tourist destination and they moved there due to low taxes/ no taxes supported by the casinos. The casinos are expanding to accomodate more tourists/new development in Vegas for the residents so they don't have to pay taxes.
Jeff is right on the money.  Until you pay your own mortgage your opinion on the matter is irrelevant.

There is a huge difference (no pun intended) between a massive tower with most of the activity on top of it and a coaster that comes screaming down from 700 feet in the air to ground level.  While the residents issues are important I think the overriding concern would be safety.  With all of the possible things that might go wrong I think they have a lot of hurdles.

I agree with arrowfreak.
These people already live within a few miles of one of the busiest airports in the world, with flights coming in at all hours. I don't think you're really going to able to hear this coaster from 1000 feet away. Also, is building this on the side really going to make a big difference in appearance to something that can already be seen from probably 20 miles away?
maybe they will build a 4d from arrow??? or a mega looper.
I don't blame the homeowners one bit for trying to stop the project. If I lived in that area and I thought it would lower the value of my home I'd be out protesting with the rest of them. On the other hand since my home is two thousand miles away it sure would be nice to see that coaster built! ;)

I can respect the homeowners feelings but I still have to agree with Den.  Sounds like a minor addition when you see all the other crap that goes up in that town every year.

The people I really feel for are those who have lived there a long time and before Las Vegas Bvd turned into the monstronsity we all know.

Where were these people when Stratosphere was being built?

When the Stratosphere idea was presented to the city, there also was a cry from residents. And what now sits in that area? You guessed it.

Well, if Arrow can't build this ride at the Stratoshphere, I'm sure there are amuesement parks, theme parks, or maybe an Xtreme park that will buy this protoype ride. ;)

Well since i pay a mortgage I can comment I suppose.. I was just in Vegas not more than three months ago, and the area around the Stratoshere is hardly what I would call a nice neighbourhood, in fact what I saw was a cavalcade of liqour stores, bums, and shoddy wedding chapels.  There may well be housing there, but if there is, it was hardly a distance where there would be any more noise from a ride than the airport.

Also why all the huff about this when Speed is no more than a block a way?

Also, if I built/bought a house within one block of one of the biggest tourist destnations in the world, I'd hardly be surprised.. If someone was selling land on the edge of Disneyworld here in Florida, I would have to assume, eventually there could be noise eminiating from the park, and assume that risk when I built.  On the other hand I would have all the right in the world to fight it, doesn't mean I should win, but I could voice my opinion.

Excellent point Mark!  I just couldn't find a way to voice as you did without sounding insensitive...

I agree with DWeaver, the surrounding area is a dump. These people gotta be kidding, what property value! With all the noise from the traffic and crowds on the Strip, and the drug activity, sleezy motels and prostitutes in the surrounding area, property value is the last thing these people should be complaining or worrying about. If anything, more improvements and renovations are needed in the area, make it half way decent instead of the run down drug infested eyesore it is now. This area's an embarrasment to the City when you compare how nice the South end of the Strip is.

And people who have no clue what that area actually looks like, and no clue how ridiculous the argument about property value is in an area as bad as this one, should also stay out of the conversation.

"There are few details at this point other than it will lift riders 740 feet into the air on the Tower’s South side turn at the top and drop them on the East side towards the Las Vegas Strip at 120 mph where they will cross the street and curve back skyward 415 feet into the air over Paradise Road."

Wow! This sounds awesome. The second drop is higher then Millennium Force. That's insane!

The supports I'm concerned about. Are the supports going to be "held" by the S. Tower?

And a train is going to go 120 mph over a road. That would be a BIG distraction for driver's on Paradise Road. There is going be a lot of car accidents around that area.

Note - Is this ride going to be a roller coaster or a thrill ride?

But the whole point is to have wind in your face. I don't think this ride would have the same effect if it were encased in plastic.

Ah the noise. A few years back, they were working on a technology that picks up the sound and rebroadcasts it, with the peaks and valleys reversed, back toward the source, effectively canceling out the noise. They were trying this out on some freeways I think.

Yeeee Haaawwww!

Just build it somewhere else then. Like out in the desert where practically no one lives.
i agree with Jeff...they want to build an AIRPORT in my backyard and we are doing all we can to fight it!!! it will literally be across the street form us and will destroy our home completely, not just the value of our home, but the actual structure too. so to say "Just move" is ludicrous at best...no one wants to buy a house that is going tobe razed in the next couple of years to make room for a major airport...

why would the coaster situation be any different for those people??

that said, the coaster freak in me says "SWEEEEEETTT"...but find another place to put it...

Just call me MPG...

I was in Vegas last year and this year, and there aren't really any houses in the immediate area of the tower, I don't see the problem.  And also its pretty loud downt town anyways, so these people probbabl wouldn't even notice it.
