Space Mountain

Space Mountain is arguably the most successful coaster of all time.  Everyone who rides it loves it and often people return to Disneyworld just to ride it.  My question is, what would it be classified as?  Obviously it would be a dark ride.  But besides that, would it be a mine ride, a kiddie ride, or something else?
I would call it a mine ride technically.  You could also call it an indoor ride.  I'm not really sure though.
Id call it a Disney Coaster.
Well, it actually isn't a roller coaster at all :)

Well at least not according to Disney. In their brochures for The Magic Kindgom back in 1986/1987 they specifically refer to Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as "Roller Coaster type rides" (emphasis added). So they are not *quite* coasters :)

BTW: I'd personally call it a mine ride. A very well themed mine ride, but a mine ride nonetherless.

Are the Space Mountain rides the same or similar at all the Disney parks? I've been to the Magic Kingdom in Florida but not to any of the others.

Would anyone care to describe the differences, if any?

The ride in Disney World (I believe...don't bite my head off if I'm wrong) is the only one with dual tracks.  The one in Disneyland was recently revamped and I believe also was given a soundtrack.  The one in Paris was built with a soundtrack, and also features a launch instead of the lift hill that the other Space Mountains have.  If anyone else has any additions, feel free.

There is a complete description of the different Space Mountains at:

http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Launchpad/9844/index2.html

It's a pretty good site, even though it claims that there are 26 clones of Space Mountain that are at other parks (including both Flights of Fear).

Kinda funny, i was checking out that site just the other day. Great info, basicly WDW has dual tracks and the cars are single seats in each row and now has music. DL and DLT are pretty much the same and have two seated side by side but no dual tracks, has music (not sure if DLT has the music), The youngest Space at DLP, Designed by Disney and built by Vekoma,  was the first to have music (wonderful orchestrations), loops and has a launch to boot.

Just a heavily themed dark mine ride.  I don't see how it could be called anything else.......

My site: www.geocities.com/ethylsite
I'd call it "boring"
-----------------
All the theaming is in the queue - once you're on the ride there is hardly any... just DARK. I would say it is more of a wild mouse than a mine train though...
Whoi Designed it?
-----------------
Aughhh look out there are Mice all around
The ones in the US were built by Walt Disney Imagineering.  The one in Paris was built by Vekoma.
I have a tattoo of the golden archer featured on the cannon of Space Mountain at DLP on my right forearm, with De La Terre A La Lune written in the same font as the queue signs.....thats enthusiasm for you!

Oh yeah, have the Alton Towers coat of arms on my right shoulder, and getting Montu on the shoulderblade, should I shutup now?!

Just like perfection, floorless...needs no correction, floorless...like no other, floorless... absolutely floorless. The Ones.

I'll agree with a previous post, that SM is pretty boring.

Anyway, at the Dahlonega Mine Train at SFOG, there is a sign that declares it as a "rollercoaster type ride."  Well, whatever... it's a coaster to me and SM is a coaster to me too, even though it's sorta lame IMO.

im probably wrong, but isnt the Space Mountain in Florida based on the Matterhorn at Disneyland?
-----------------
"It was sure nice of Mr. Crab to give me a job here!" "And he was sure nice to start you off at $50 an hour! When i started, i had to pay Mr. Crab $100 an hour!"
correct me if I am wrong..but did SM at DisneyLand get a new train...I remember it being kind of like the whizzer at SFGAm..where one person sits in front of the other in the lap..I remember when I was younger I rode my mom's lap.
What justifies Space Mountain as a Mine Train?
I just don't see it at all...
But I don't think its a Wild Mouse at all.
If I would have to compare it to another coaster, I would compare it to Cedar Point's Wildcat.

Yes, the Space Mountain at Florida is based on the Matterhorn.
They had the first space mountain, and after it became popular, Disney decided to get for Disneyland. But since we already had the Matterhorn, we got a different design.

Space Mountain isn't boring. Anyone who calls a coaster boring isn't much of an enthusiast. Some are better than others, but there aren't any bad coasters. (gets off soapbox) Actually, Space Mountain (disneyland) is a very intense ride. Lots of lateral G's at the finale of the ride. Plus coasters with soundtracks... don't get me started... :)

Knotts 2002...ready when you are!

I'm an enthusiast, but I think SM is a boring ride.  Sorry.
