Son of Beast:Whats it like?

Huh? Rough, intense, scary, fun, fast, slow, painful, smooth or what? I really don't want this to be a flaming/bashing thread, but I can't find a descent review anywhere.

Why dont you ride it and judge it yourself?

Well actually, I just wanted to know if it was painful and if it were to be considered "safe" to not staple yourself in the car with the lap bar. Anybody elses opinions wouldn't hurt either.

It would probably be safe and make the ride a little better. I went opening season and wasn't very pleased with it. I can only judge it from that day though which wasnt that great. They closed it until about 1 or 2pm in the afternoon so we just rode the Beast the whole morning. When we finally saw it running we went over there and the wait was already an hour and a half. The queue was miserable right out where the sun can hit it perfectly on a 90 degree day. They were only running one train which sucked cause it made the wait turn from an hour and a half to 2 and a half hours. When we got to the station I finally started to get excited......but then it broke down adding to the 2 hours it had already been. After a short delay we didnt want to take any chances and got the shortest line available which was 2nd to the front. I've heard that this is the best spot on that ride and that was just a month ago but it's been 2 years since i've ridden it. And if that's the best seat then count me out. The ride just hurt, I think they should've made it about 5,000 feet and not 7,000 just to be like it's father. They could've made the ride a lot better with some better planning. The loop was the best loop I have ever experienced but the rest of the ride ruined it. Sorry for bashing this ride but it made me pissed that we drove 4-5 hours for it expecting a lot more.

Oh yeah, I just wanted to know if anyone has ridden it lately, has it gotten better since opening year? Cause I have heard a lot of good reviews after opening season. And do they still have the On ride photo right before the lift? thought that was one of the funniest things.

It's rough and intense, but quite enjoyable. And it's not nearly as "painful" as it's father. Frankly, one shouldn't ride coasters at all if they can't handle these.
I think it has an inspired layout. Werner Stengel is brilliant; all his layouts greatly impress me. The problem is in no way Son of Beast's layout, I just think it wasn't carried out very well. The Roller Coaster Corporation of America does not have many coasters in it's track record and to carry out a project of this size was not the best idea. However I have never ridden another RCCA so I don't know how they stack up. CCI, GCI, and Intamin in my opinion would have been more qualified to build SOB. Don't get me wrong, I really do love the ride, however I think that the whole concept could have been better delivered by another company.

The last time I rode it was back in May and I vowed to never ride it again until PKI does something with those trains. And I'm afraid they won't.

It does have a unique layout but those trains are awful. It's not the lap bar but the fact that they raised the floor to where your knees are right up against the lap bar. And when you experience laterals, especially in the first giant helix, it gets painful.

I didn't think SOB was bad when I rode it in 2000 but the small modifications to the trains since then have made a decent ride into a bad one.

You know, I didnt have not ONE problem with "lateral induced pain" on Sonny, either opening season or 2001. Though I think I should add that 2001 I rode Sonny only two day after SRM and the "hurts so good" G-trained The Legend.

Anyway, after our first ride in 2000, me, my sis, my mom and my dad all proclaimed Sonny to be our favorite existing woodie (Mom and Dad will always prefer the Riverview Bobs to EVERYTHING). For me, Sonny has only been usurped by The Legend and Lightning Racer in my list of woodies I love. What's weird about it is that it's one of the few coasters in my "favorites" list that I cannot distincly say why I like it so. I guess it's just that it is so 'powerful'

I will have to say that at 6'2" i just barely squeezed into those trains. I cannot see anyone with longer legs than mine to ever fit in. It had to be the most uncomfortable position to ride a coaster on. I seriously thought that i might not be able to get out after contorting my body that much.

I will say though, that the ride provides a unique experience and that the loop is a lot of fun. If they would find some new trains, I could definitely love this ride.

Ya know, I can't tell you good or bad. Ive ridden it over 200 times and other than first year it was never really rough to me.

FOr a smoother ride try a middle seat in any car.

Chuck, who likes sonny and considers it his #1 wooden looper :)

It is very brutal, especially to tall people. Some can't even fit simply because of their height. I will not be riding it much (if at all) until something is done with those trains. I am about 6'2" and I get big bruises on my knees from the hand bar. It's just too rough.

As far as stapling. Well, I'd say theres no way in **** that you are going to come out of that train. Some say it's better to be stapled. The jury is still out for me. I get rediculously bruised regardless.

Eric --Thinks bruises on your knees from a roller coaster is a bit much.

You don't have to shout. Do you know how many internet etiquette laws your breaking by typing in all caps like that? Well........your breaking one. Don't type in all caps.

Superdude, Burks2005: bad move. You could get booted for that. If you have a problem with someone, don't badmouth them, it only makes you look bad. Just be nice :)

Yea, the ride isn't really painful as long as you sit in a middle row of a car, it still isn't horrible, its mainly jsut the raised floor that bothers me, I also don't like the not so wide double bars, I think they could fix those too.

Can we change the name of Top Gun to your mom so no one wants to ride your mom?

Why would you want to staple tight into a woodie? There are a couple of airtime ops on SOB, and stapling minimizes that. You're safe on the ride, and I LOVE the ride. After its daddy and FoF, it's my fave coaster.

Alan--PTC02

I prefer to staple myself in on that ride. There isnt much airtime, so you dont have to worry about missin it. Plus, you dont slide around the seat as much, which could cause some pain int he hips.
At 6'4" the ride is only remotely painful to me in the front of every car. I rode 22 times at the Travel Channel shoot, and it was only the last 2 rides that got to me. And for those who say it doesn't have airtime, I say sit in the very back right seat and tell me that again. I've gotten some very good standup air in the back seat down the first drop and down the last drop. The ride can be painful at times, but as of late it has been running great.
