Son of Beast closes

One word:

FIREWOOD!

It's always been a POS and I don't see why the park keeps sinking money into it. Every ride I have had I have felt nothing but torture.

I give kudos to its' fans but maybe it's time to give it up and burn it to the ground.

And I thought SOB this season had been the smoothest since it re-opened in July 07!

It seemed fine my last ride on June 14th, but I have to wonder if the bad storms on May 30th had anything to do with this?

Theres only one problem with the ride IMHO its the turn at the top of the second hill and the rose bowl. Coasters have been reworked before. Doze the bowl, make a out and back that keeps some speed for the second helix and go with it. The first drops never really been a problem cept first year.Chuck

It was a bad ride in july of 07 as well.

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I think I am in a category the same as Soggy, with a different last opinion.

When I saw the concept of SOB, I thought this idea was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It looks like however, this should have stayed on paper or a CAD file. I wanted to ride this thing so bad when I saw it in the internet, but never made it out there. If I went today, I would most likely skip it. I know what I like and I do not like Mean Streak in the past 10 years. If this is worse, I will pass on the coaster credit.

One question, if this was totally rebuilt (I mean torn down to footers and rebuilt) with a current designer would it work? I am experiencing my first current woodie in less than three weeks at Waldameer. So I am not eductated on how that quility could be with SOB concept.

It's the only coaster that hurt me to the point that I wanted off the 2 times that I rode it.

I do find it ironic that most coaster enthusiast, mostly people who have been on more different coasters than most other people, find the ride unacceptable, while on the other hand, the regular joes, who have rode maybe 10 or 20 different coasters, can't get enough of it.

Now would be the perfect time for the park to consider either a plug-n-play retrofit, or dividing it out to the poor to keep them warm for the winter.

I can say the time's I've ridden it, after the second hill I wanted off! The Rose at the bottom felt like my rib's were being rattled and shuck, the second helix was just the same. With the old train I came off the ride with yellow and black bruises.

I thought it was very smooth back in 2000 when it first opened, but after that it was just pain rough! I stopped ridding it up on till after it reopened in July of '07, to me the new trains didn't help ether, the ride is still rough and mean!
So I retired from riding it, and hope it gets torn down, and something much better get's put in its place.

Its only nine years old, I mean come on!

Given the PAC-10's affiliation with the BCS, Sonny's Rosebowl hits harder than any other... ;)

My knees are still pissed at me and I don't blame them. :)

My favorite MJ tune: "Billie Jean" which I have been listening to alot now. RIP MJ.

I really expected them to bring it down after the accident with the broken support structure. In my mind I would've thought Cedar Fair simply acquired the problem and were not bound to the poor decision made by Paramount Parks to build the thing. Alas, I was wrong, and it's still there. You'd think it would be too much of a liability to keep it running. They took out the only good part of the ride.

If a good wooden coaster beats me up a little, all the better. There's something about coming back into the station feeling completely spent and slightly battered...to me that's a sign of a powerful ride.

Then there's Son of Beast.

I only rode it once, in June of its inaugural year. It was jackhammering so hard I literally felt my brain bouncing around inside my skull. Worst pain ever. I exited the ride seriously worried that I may have suffered some brain damage (still not sure I didn't...I mean, if I did, how would I know it? :) ).

The loop was nice.

Nah. It suffered from SUCK.

Edit to add: I think if it is true that Big Bad Wolf will be removed at the end of this season, it would only be fair to lose this crap ride as well.

I have to totally agree with Chuck here. Its the top of the second hill and that whole Rosebowl which is the problem. That transition just kills any speed the train still has and the rosebowl literally shakes its passengers like a British Nanny.

I would love to see that removed in favor of a two large airtime hills, a high turnaround a series of smaller hills and maybe a low to the ground section then rising up to connect to the block.

But I would also love to see it knocked over. Go figure.

Why has this ride never had any padding? Good Grief!

It still baffles me that it usually has a line. I know the GP doesn't have much to compare it to but there is only so much one can take. I don't see how the GP can stand it. Well, not all of them. I have overheard plenty of complaints.

I don't know, maybe they love the feeling of their brain being bashed around in their skull.

Maybe some OTHER park would be STUPID enought to buy it.

Honestly...1st, many GP'ers think it still has the loop when they get in line, and 2nd, other than the two brief trips through the bottom of the rose bowl it's not any more rough than a lot of the other woodies out there...it's nothing at all like pre-July 07 and 1-2 on the red train is fairly smooth overall.

I'm almost inclined to say they're keeping it around till they can get a replacement ready for that area, but with CF putting in tons of expensive coasters the last two, and the next two, years, I don't know when that'll be...

I to can't believe there is a line for this piece of garbage, all those people are just waiting to get roughed up! I remember the last time I rode it, the two guys behind me were saying that there back hurts, when they got off the ride.

Wounder why RRCA only built seven coasters, then went out of business?

I've got a love/hate relationship with SOB. Love the idea of riding it! The hulking, looming structure attracts me like a moth to a flame. The darn thing is just so gnarly... So I ride.

That said, every time I ride the thing, there's at least one point at which I admit that it's just not the coaster I want it to be. It's primarily due to the pain that it dishes out. Plus, after they re-tooled the ride post-accident, I find the last half of the ride a bore. So, to be physically assaulted, then BORED to boot.

Funny thing is, if the ride had been up when we were there last weekend, I probably would have given it a go.

Spiral out...

Who in there right mind would design SOB? The ride is insane! Almost 80MPH for what? Jeff is right they took out the only good part of the ride and it was the loop. Now its just a pain making machine! I would hope that after this cedar fair decides to just demolish it and build a new woodie in its place.
