Well, I too have kicked the cigarette habbit after 5 years of smoking, but I still will partake in the occasinal mini-cigar. What bugs me is the fact that it is against the rules to smoke in line. I follow the rules, so should everyone else. If someone is flaunting the rule about smoking in line, then it stands to reason that they may flaunt the rules in reguards to riding the coaster safely. And we all know what that could lead to.
I realize this may be an extreme case, but rules are rules.
I usually will read (in a rather loud voice) the signs in the queue that spell out the "no smoking in line" rule. Almost without fail, the smoker will put the butt out. Most people simply don't know that it is not allowed, or choose to not read the signs.

supermandl, your point is one of the most valid. It was very unusual even in the '80s, given the number of people I've known growing up that grew tobacco. All you people reading this that are around the age of 20 and younger, know that the schools had smokers areas, hence the term smoke hole. This was a very common thing, and all my friends that were in high school during the '70s, they speak of not even really having to go to a specified area if thier teacher smoked, too. This whole idea of smokers v/s nonsmokers is very new. Until everyone around has grown up being pushed through a system that teaches that smoking is bad, there are going to be people around that have no idea that what they are doing is even remotely considered wrong (I am not talking about the people in line) and I want to know why is it OK to trash smokers. If anything, call them PEOPLE THAT SMOKE. It is beyond me, why are they idiots?
Second, the smokers tax paid for alot of those stadiums BEFORE they imposed smoking bans, especially stadiums in Canada, so why was it OK not to find something in the nonsmokers world to tax? Not that I care or want to elaborate on that, it is really not necessary. Just so you know who built your stadiums for you (especially that Sky Dome thingy), or at least helped pay.
Third, like I said before, perfumes really do a number on me. Just like supermandl, standing near the perfumed people for any amount of time, seriously gives me an ill headache.
On the issue of cell phones, just because you carry one or need one or *need one to stay in touch with your friends* doesn't make it OK because YOU know you are are not going to drop yours. I've had things such as keys that were pinned to my pants on the inside pop loose. I'm sorry but most of these people are KIDS they tote the phones around and feel like it's important for them to stay in communication. I could imagine the all out importance of the many calls I've seen people ma椀渀最⸀ 䤀✀瘀攀 攀瘀攀渀 猀攀攀渀 愀戀漀甀琀 琀栀爀攀攀 瀀攀漀瀀氀攀 琀栀愀琀 氀漀漀欀攀搀 愀琀 洀攀 愀猀 琀栀攀礀 眀攀爀攀 栀漀氀搀椀渀最 琀栀椀攀爀 瀀栀漀渀攀 愀渀搀 猀愀椀搀 猀漀洀攀琀栀椀渀最 氀椀欀攀 眀栀漀 猀栀漀甀氀搀 䤀 挀愀氀氀 渀攀砀琀㼀℀㼀 䨀甀猀琀 琀栀椀渀欀 漀昀 椀琀 愀猀 愀渀 椀猀猀甀攀 漀昀 琀栀攀 爀甀氀攀猀⸀ 匀漀 洀愀渀礀 瀀攀漀瀀氀攀 愀爀攀 最漀椀渀最 琀漀 戀攀 挀愀爀爀礀椀渀最 琀栀攀猀攀 琀栀椀渀最猀 愀爀漀甀渀搀Ⰰ 愀渀搀 渀漀渀猀愀昀攀 琀栀椀渀最猀 栀愀瀀瀀攀渀 眀栀攀渀 瀀攀漀瀀氀攀 樀漀椀渀 椀渀 渀甀洀戀攀爀猀⸀ 匀甀爀攀Ⰰ 琀栀攀爀攀 洀愀礀 渀漀琀 戀攀 愀 戀愀渀 漀渀 瀀栀漀渀攀猀 椀渀 氀椀渀攀 漀爀 眀栀愀琀攀瘀攀爀⸀ 䄀 瘀椀搀攀漀 挀愀洀攀爀愀 椀猀 愀 瀀爀漀樀攀挀琀椀氀攀Ⰰ 爀椀最栀琀㼀 倀攀漀瀀氀攀 最攀琀 琀栀漀猀攀 漀渀 氀漀琀猀 漀昀 爀椀搀攀猀Ⰰ 猀漀 眀栀愀琀 爀攀愀氀氀礀 椀猀 琀栀攀 搀椀昀昀攀爀攀渀挀攀 戀攀琀眀攀攀渀 琀栀愀琀 愀渀搀 愀渀礀琀栀椀渀最 攀氀猀攀㼀 倀爀漀樀攀挀琀椀氀攀⸀ 䤀 琀栀椀渀欀 椀昀 䤀 愀猀欀攀搀 愀 爀椀搀攀 漀瀀 愀琀 䈀䜀圀 椀昀 䤀 挀漀甀氀搀 昀椀氀洀 洀礀 爀椀搀攀Ⰰ 琀栀攀礀✀搀 猀愀礀 渀漀⸀ 䠀漀眀 搀漀 琀栀攀礀 欀渀漀眀 䤀✀洀 渀漀琀 爀攀愀氀氀礀 最漀椀渀最 琀漀 搀爀漀瀀 椀琀 漀爀 渀漀琀㼀 吀栀攀礀 搀漀渀✀琀 欀渀漀眀 猀漀 琀栀攀礀 搀漀渀✀琀 爀椀猀欀 椀琀⸀ 㰀戀爀㸀 㰀戀爀㸀䰀椀最栀琀攀渀 甀瀀 愀 氀椀琀琀氀攀 琀栀攀爀攀Ⰰ 眀漀甀氀搀 ✀礀愀Ⰰ 䰀攀最攀渀搀愀爀礀⸀ 䄀渀礀眀愀礀猀 䤀 欀渀攀眀 眀栀愀琀 礀漀甀爀 爀攀猀瀀漀渀猀攀 眀愀猀 最漀椀渀最 琀漀 戀攀 戀攀昀漀爀攀 䤀 愀猀欀攀搀 㰀椀洀最 猀爀挀㴀∀⼀昀漀爀甀洀猀⼀椀洀愀最攀猀⼀猀洀椀氀攀⸀最椀昀∀ 戀漀爀搀攀爀㴀∀ ∀㸀⸀⸀⸀⸀⸀⸀⸀ഀഀഀ ⨀⨀⨀ 吀栀椀猀 瀀漀猀琀 眀愀猀 攀搀椀琀攀搀 戀礀 瀀开挀开爀 漀渀 ㈀⼀㈀㠀⼀㈀ ⸀ ⨀⨀⨀

LOL, I'm "lightened." I guess I get very passionate when it comes to my health and well-being. I'm also kind of surprised at the many different views on the subject, ESPECIALLY the one from Justin who says he'll smoke in line regardless if it's the rule or not. That, coming from a coaster nut, surprised me the most.
But this is an excellent discussion which hasn't degraded into namecalling. It's good to hear opinions from all sides of the spectrum, it helps me see where other people stand.

After reading all of the posts so far, we definitely have two distinct views. Lemme add mine to the mix...
When I can avoid them, smokers don't bother me. A lot of my friends smoke. It's something they enjoy doing and I respect that. However, they know that I don't want to be anywhere near it, so they are respectful of that and stand and move away from me when their smoking. Now, not 10ft away, but enough that they're far enough away when we're outside. Maybe 6 ft or so, depends on the wind. So, the habit of smoking doesn't bother me, it's their choice to do so.
Now, I'm in a line. A smoker lights up next to me. I understand it's a habit type of thing, maybe they didn't know that they're not really supposed to smoke while in line. Since they're lighting up next to me, I kindly ask them to please stop smoking. Most of the time, they will. There are sometimes a few which don't. That's when I get pissed off. You see, I compare it to loud music. I don't mind it at a distance, but if it's right next to me, it pisses me off. No, it's not going to kill me, but if it's prolonged exposure, I might become deaf.
In a nut shell.... smoking in lines is fine, as long as I'm not around it.
That is pretty messed up, Justin. If that is your deal, though, you shoulnd't have mentioned it if anyone hadn't noticed, you may have been one of the sneaky ones, but you'll get caught now.
As for smoking in public in general, for those who are bothered by second hand that badly, never go to a concert, especially at a House of Blues. The line to get in is the only place people don't smoke, and the wooden (me thinks it is, anyways) laminate floor is so pretty and expensive looking!

I agree with you (if the sarcasm wasn't understood in my post above) that queue line smoking will most likely not do anything to you. I understand that people with a bad case of asthma (Mine is mild) could end up in the hospital from it, but if worse comes to worse, and you have asked them to put the cigarette out and they wont, simply explain "I have asthma, and cigarettes can kill me." I would stop smoking for someone if I heard that.
What I don't understand, is how it is societies fault that people smoke. I will agree that there are plenty of things (mostly people) out there that are influences on people, but the choice is one that you make.
I chose to smoke, and I've chosen to quit (well, cigarettes) regardless of society, and I was just a child. I do not believe that society has that great of an impact on people's choice to smoke, but that is not what this thread was created to discuss.
Back on topic, when someone is smoking in a park, and it is bothering me, I simply ask them to put it out politely. There is no need for name calling. In no way do I support or condone cigarettes or cigarette smoking, but to use terms such as "Inconsiderate idiot" is just uncalled for. My mother smokes, and she is neither inconsiderate, nor an idiot. If you want her to stop smoking, just ask her. She'll take one last puff, and put it out. I've found that 94% of smokers are like that.
If you want something changed or stopped, be polite.

I believe that some people can quit without outside help (you did, and so did I). But I disagree with you on the impact society has played in people's decicions to smoke. I think with the settlements that the tobacco industry are now paying, some of the courts feel that people were pressured into smoking. But hey, I can agree to disagree with you here.

You know, I figured that this would turn into a big argument. I have nothing against smokers, quite honestly. But, it's YOUR fault that you started smoking, and YOUR fault if you can't wait an hour through a coaster line. All you smokers keep saying how it's so hard to quit, and you can't wait through a line to have a cigarette. Well, I feel for you in the sense that it's an incredibly hard habit to kick, but, even though you are addicted, why don't you try and have some respect for us non-smokers? I have respect for you, I don't come and rip the cigarette out of your mouth do I? Well, then try and give us a break, and wait until you get out of line. If you can't wait through the line a coaster has without a cigarette, then wait until the line dies down. Not to sound like an a**hole, but if you want to kill yourselves, go for it. Just don't bring us down with you.

The polarity of responses in this thread illustrates how smoking has been turned into more of a political issue in society rather than an issue of choice and consideration (due to media coverage of the tobacco lawsuits, schools taking such a strong approach against it, etc.). It does seem extreme when a child calls his grandfather a horrible person and drug user from what he/she's been taught in school just because he smokes.
The health impacts of smoking have been known for quite some time, even though the Surgeon General's warning didn't come about until a few decades ago. In previous decades, many non-smoking households would maintain ashtrays in consideration of their smoking friends. It was an accepted part of society. Even today, I keep ashtrays in my house though there's only one room I allow guests to smoke in. If the weather is nice, they go out on the deck.
GandC has a pretty reasonable response above.
You can't blame society for smoking, it's an individual choice and remains one until a person decides to quit, even though they may need outside assistance (most of which is covered under insurance).
I believe that all of the negative attention towards smoking has given many non-smokers the attitude that they can treat smokers as second-class citizens and generalize about them as an undesirable group. To me, most smokers are considerate if you don't take an attitude that you are morally superior to them because you don't smoke. I'm not sure who irritates me more, the inconsiderate smoker or the militant anti-smoker.
When it comes to coaster queues, if it were up to me I would allow smoking in lines in the open air, but not in enclosed portions of the queue. But the rules are established by the parks and everyone must respect them.
I think I saw somewhere that 30% of adults smoke. That's a huge number. I do acknowledge that socitiey does play an important part in influencing smokers, but I believe that it does not play as big a part as most people think it does. I respect your opinion, and I in no way hate you. In fact I respect you more for being such a good debater. Any way, I don't have much more to say about this subject...
