Sky Whirl to be replaced by Invertigo

Posted | Contributed by ShiveringTim

Six Flags Great America revealed their plans for next season in an article in the Chicago Daily Herald. Mentioned was the removal of the Sky Whirl, an Intamin Triple Wheel, and the addition of Two-Face, a Vekoma Invertigo. Also mentioned was the possibility of another coaster for next season.

An interesting fact is that the Chicago park's twin in Santa Clara, CA, Paramount's Great America, also replaced their Triple Wheel with the first Invertigo in the US, probably the only similarity between the two parks since Marriott's sold them.

Read the article The Daily Herald.

Much as I hate to see one of SFGAm's original rides go, the fact is no one has been riding it the last few years. Most days they were only filling up 1/2 or 1/3 of the cars and most only had 2 or 3 people. It is a shame that a modern "Classic" like Sky Whirl cannot be saved, but it has probably outlived its ability to attract riders.
This coaster will be great. Although, I've never riden on an invertigo, it sounds like I'll like it. I want to know what the other coaster will be. I hope it is a hyper-twister, but with inversions, unlike Raging Bull.
lol, arrow. never seen anyone quite so attached to a "ferris wheel" of types. Although I'm glad SFGA is getting a new coaster, I agree with arrow guy that this is a bad desicion for the park. If they can't maintain it profit wise, well then I guess I understand. But those of you who have been to SFGA know that it has a very unique and hard to find family atmosphere.
I believe this is the beginning of the end of that. :(

The Intamin double and triple wheels were always difficult to maitain, even when they were new. I'm suprised that this one has lasted this long.Hopefully a traditional giant wheel is in the plans somewhere. I agree that the trend away from "family oriented" rides is somewhat distressing. Believe it or not, there are people who go to an amusement park who DON'T ride the coasters.
Well said, Dutchman! :)

2Hostyl, Your right forgive me. I did accidently skip that paragraph, but it said that it was going to cost $3.5 million dollars. I did read that right didn't I? Wasn't Face/Off $9 million dollars to build though? So this 180ft tall Invertigo would at least cost $9.5 million since it's going to be bigger than the other ones. It's just a hunch. ;)

Invertigos are so dope. I just loved Two Face at SFA, the only problem I see with an Invertigo is not the small capacity, but the frequent breakdowns.

I think that's why they're considering another attraction. PKI tried to take care of throughput problems with Face/Off and Drop Zone. Two major new attractions right across the midway from each other should have taken care of any crowd issues. However they opened in '99 and we all know what happened to Paramount drop towers that year. As a result, Face/Off had to take the brunt of the new attraction crowd last year. Same goes for SFA when they added both an Invertigo and Joker's Jinx in the same season. Hopefully SFGAm will see this throughput problem with the Invertigos and get that second new attraction.

I just knew the ride op I talked to about this was right.
Last year about this time, rumors started surfacing that Shockwave's last season would be 2000. Any more news on this rumor?
With the way they made their statements in the Herald, Shockwave will not be going anywhere.

I love my Invertigo at SFA. In my opinion the last two seats are the most intense going through the vertical loop. It feels like your face is being ripped off! I agree the pph could be better.
So are the cages still on the ride or are they already off? I know Fright Fest starts soon and I was wondering if "Sky Hirl" (last years fright fest name) would be apart of it for one last time. I haven't seen the ride listed for sale, I'm wondering if it's headed towards the scrap pile. I use to work for SFGM in 90 & 91 and Sky Whirl was down for over 3 weeks in 91 due to hydrolic problems.
I know some may disagree on this issue but I truly believe that the Whizzer should be torn down. I have only been on it twice and have had bad experiences both times. The first time I was nearly thrown out of the car and the second time I nearly hit my head on the front of the car because the brakes hit too hard too quick. My friends have also had bad experiences too. I'm not the only one.
:-(, wow its been awhile since anyones post on here....
