Sky Whirl to be replaced by Invertigo

Posted | Contributed by ShiveringTim

Six Flags Great America revealed their plans for next season in an article in the Chicago Daily Herald. Mentioned was the removal of the Sky Whirl, an Intamin Triple Wheel, and the addition of Two-Face, a Vekoma Invertigo. Also mentioned was the possibility of another coaster for next season.

An interesting fact is that the Chicago park's twin in Santa Clara, CA, Paramount's Great America, also replaced their Triple Wheel with the first Invertigo in the US, probably the only similarity between the two parks since Marriott's sold them.

Read the article The Daily Herald.

Well - Looks like the 2+ hour wait for this ride is in our future.

I can't believe they're killing that wheel! I didn't get to ride it the day I was there because it was closed. By "long in the tooth" is he saying it's too hard to maintain, or it's just old? It's a fascinating ride. Bummer it has to go.

Sounds like they may be doing exactly what SFA did last year, with a Two Face and a Jokers Jinx. Also, a two face with a 180 foot tall hill? That loop would have to be a lot taller than 72-feet or else it would snap necks. The 125' tall model is pretty darn intense, what's a 180' tall one going to be like?

If the 180 foot hill is confirmed, (and it looks kike it is) I say COOL!!! It's about time a park decided to up the ante on something like an Invertigo. KUDOS to SFGAm!! Did I mention that I am a real sucker for Boomerangs/Invertigos? Six inversions in a compact design, intense!! Too bad I live so far away, I would love to ride "Super-Invertigo"!!

-------------
Gotta ride 'em all!
I agree, Soggy..I also found boomerangs to be quite fun. So I guess ill be making another trip to GreatAmerica next year.
Well I happen to love our (SFA's) Invertigo. And since Chicago/Milwaukee is still home to my parents/sister I know I will be back at the park next year to ride this new one.

And as for the 2+ hour waits, the line for Two-Face may get long, but the other lines are going to shrink drastically. Why do I say this? Well I dont think that Two-Face is going to bring that many more people to the park. The lines at SFGAm are always big, but that is the local traffic. I dont see there being any incentive for people to travel to go to the park (not for an invertigo) so I dont expect the crowds to be any different then say when Raging Bull was opened. Now you have an extra line to suck people away. I can almost see it...walkons on B:TR...it would be fabulous. The only problem is, unless they revamp the interior of the park, the entrance to Two Face will be in County Fair. That would put "most" of the major coasters really close together (Eagle, Demon, Two-Face, Bull, Viper). They really need to put something in Orleans Place (by Shockwave) to balance out the crowds. Then again they may have the queue run under Batman's Lift, but like I said, they would have to revamp the current paths...could be done =]

BTW: Jeff 'long in tooth' usually just implies old. I wish they had had the parks view of the Sky Whril and not Rubens, his recent comments have been questionable to say the least =) *** This post was edited by 2Hostyl on 9/21/2000. ***
Un...be...lievable....
The article never said that it was going to be 180ft. It said that it will exceed the 125ft. hieght limit. Face/Off, Invertigo, and the other Two-Face coaster are all 138ft., and that exceeds the 125ft. hieght limit at Gurnee. Just to let you guys know.

Can you take me higher? (CREED)
YESSSSS that evil wheel is dying, I hate that thing I got stuck on it for a long time once. I'm very happy their putting in a new coaster. GO SFGAm
BEASTmaster: In paragraph six of the article, it clearly states "At 180 feet, Great America's version of Two-Face would be slightly taller than the one in Maryland." It cant get any clearer than that. You must have just glossed over that one...it happens =].
The Park has a request in for a 180' height variance. There is only one other idea for a 2nd coaster if this particular coaster doesn't reach 180'. How about Impulse.

I wa originally opposed to an invertigo, but after reading the article (and seeing the photo) it doesn't sound so bad.

I really hope they do get a 2nd for next year. I mean, WOW, would lines go down.

Just a quick question for all of you: are all invertigos like Two-Face, where the cars face each other? Or at least that's what the pic looks like.

I am extremely exited to Great America is adding
antoher inverted type ride. Face/Off at PKI
was a great ride. The slow throughput hurts but
I hope the board approves it.
am i the only one who doesnt like invertigos here? i thought the one a PKI sucked big time, but i am still in favor of it so it takes the crowds away from other rides.. other than that i am dissapointed SFGAm isnt getting anything a little more exciting
yes, they all face one another except for the two end rows. There, you do not get to "face off", but you do get the full 5 g's of force that the 138' tall model pulls on the return run.

Six Flags America IS a Six Flags park!
I love PKI's face/off. The wait is ridiculous, but beyond that the ride is a fantastic one. I'm incredibly jealous about a near-hyper invertigo!
I love face/off at pki, but i wish sfgam was getting an invertigo and an impulse for sure. That would be 100% lovely, but just the invertigo is a little dissapointing. I would like to see a CCI sometime......
Hey it's about time! SFGAm needs a new coaster and this will be fine with me! I wasn't too big of a fan of the wheel. I would rather have it be replaced by an Invertigo. Also MAYBE they will put a path in that goes under batman ot somthing, because it is a pain in the *** to walk all the way around the park just to get to another ride. So I hope SFGAm will do the right here!
All I can say is that if SFGAM ever wants to yank the Whizzer, there's a park in Missouri that wants it. ;)
