Six Flags to reduce spending after capital intensive program

Posted | Contributed by giant rider

Six Flags will only spend $150-$160 millon on improvements this year. They spent $250 million in 2000 and $300 million in 1999. Now that Premier has been in control for a few years and has mixed things up a bit with new parks, name changes and new costers and rides, they plan to cool off and let the improvements they made pay off.

See the complete story on the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's site.

I'm impressed at your arrogancy.
Is it hard to be stuck on yourself that much?

Now on a more serious note, yes I indeed know what some parks are thinking AND DOING, not all of them mind you like the aquisation that you provided above. I do know some insider information, but that is just due to contacts and luck.

Now as for the Six Flags spending and deficit debate. Before everyone started attacking me I made the comment that now CF could over take SF in some aspects. This was immediately fired upon with "what does CF have to do with it" I don't know if I am the only one that can see this or not, but SF is operating in the red zone. Now, unless this has changed in the last few hours, operating in debt is a very dangerous and sticky situation. Most companies have not survived when they have been in the red for extended amounts of time and thus have folded. Now I do not wish this on Six Flags, but I do have concerns about their spending like there is no tomorrow way of doing business. Is this healthy? IMHO no. I use CF:LP as an example of business. They do not add rides unless there is can be a ROI. Such as they do not steal alloted funds from other parks to pay for other parks new rides. In the exact opposition SF parks do. How else do you think SFO/SFWOA or whatever else they have changed the name to in the last five hours can afford 3 coasters in one year and yet another this year. Somehow, Somewhere this money came into existence. AND I HIGHLY DOUBT that SFO generated it all itself.

To make a long story short, in order for SF to be a healthy company, they need to slow down on expenditures, work on company morale and possibly share the wealth. Focusing on one park may be good for the short term, but it almost appears they can't look beyond tomorrow...no Mammoosh, I'm not saying CF:LP is perfect, just that they have been at this (I think) longer and are more field tested.

I meant no disrespect by saying you provided humor to CoasterBuzz. My apologies. Actually I agree with a lot of what you say. Your last post was right on the money -- well except for saying I'm arrogant. Anyway who knows me will attest that I am not. I am wrong often and have no problems admitting so. But I digress....

My main gripe [and this does not necessarily apply to you] is how some people say things like "CP is mad at SFMM and their gonna build [insert number] coasters in 2002." Its nice to dream but very few people know what the powers-that-be at both parks are thinking. I know I don't. If you do than I certainly appreciate the insight. I find it hard to believe that any park or park chain knows for sure what they'll build more than a year in advance. There are just too many unknowns -- the economy being the biggest -- for them to commit to plans so far in advance. When you talk about ROI you've hit the nail on the head.

Anyway I think we're more in line with each other than not. My apologies again if you felt insulted...it was not my intention.

Apology accepted, I may have over reacted a little. The famous line "CP is mad at SFMM and their gonna build [insert number] coasters in 2002" does not apply to me really. In fact I could care less what the Point does as long as my homepark (WoF) gets something decent.

Oh well let's let this thread die, I think we have kicked the dead horse enough times...I think it's dead ;)

Yah, I know where SFO got the money for their 3 coasters in 2000 - from Astroworld! Heh...

I'm expecting SOME sort of investment in AW in 2002. It's the only major, older Six Flags park that got zilch in 2000 and 2001 (we were doing ok before Premier came along!)
