Six Flags reports a 4% drop in attendance

Posted | Contributed by supermandl34

Six Flags reported yesterday a 4% drop in attendance for the month of June compared to last year, and said it would affect first-half revenue.

Read more from Reuters.

This is not suprising the weather across the country has really been not been conducive to going to amusement parks.

Any word on CF's attendance? From what I have read on the boards, opinion is their attendance has got to be down, too.

EDIT: Never mind, I just found it, I guess I should have looked first before asking... according to their news release CF attendance was down 7% in June.

I can' say I'm that surprised. For a change I can live with the weather excuse because I know it has sucked in my neck of the woods at least. With the amazing year that Dorney had, and with CP's Dragster down, that certainly wasn't helping CF's number either.

I think the real test for whether or not this is a good year for amusement parks comes 3rd quarter, as it always does.

DELETED! What time does the water show start?

I agree Jeff. In the Washington, D.C. area we had only three Sunny days in May, it rained every weekend in June. Last weekend was the first rain free weekend we had in a couple of months and SFA was packed. I never saw SFA use the overflow queues until this past weekend. We're expecting another sunny weekend this weekend and I expect the same kind of turn out.
Speaking of Deja Vu'....

Didn't we hear this last year?... and the year before?.... and....

We did hear this last year but I believe it this year. CF is reporting the same reason as the decline in their attendance.
I am considering a trip to Six Flags Worlds of Adventure in Cleveland. I was wondering how nice this park is. I've heard rumors that it is not a very clean or fun park to visit. I am a coaster enthusiast and don't really care about the water park or ex-Sea World part of it either. Is it worth the trip? Now, back to the subject at hand. If this park is as bad as I've heard, couldn't this also be the reason for drop in attendance?

Just ignore what you've heard and give it a whirl. Don't go in with a preconceived notion.

Arena football has arrived in the Windy City. Go "Chicago Rush"

If Six Flags blames the decrease in attendance on bad weather and a bad economy every year, then I think the apocolypse is just around the corner.

I still think the park blows, but if I were to think that solely based on the opinions of others, I'd likely not go to any park ever and would have 16 coasters on my track record.

How is that possible? (sorry, couldn't resist)

Jeff, I thought your "Word of the Week(tm)" for this week was "lame". Now you're using "blows"...

Now we have concrete evidence that you're not really Jeff - either that or you're already getting "prepared" for your Luau this weekend ;)

Well Marine World's attendance is way up this year, which is a good thing IMO. Just means we will hopefully get lots of future expansion!

Not only was it surprising to see Six Flags hold its attendance better than Cedar Fair has through June (when Cedar Fair spanked it silly last year) but Six Flags announced that attendance is up by 1% over the past month (which does bode well for Cedar and ALL parks).

Now that many families will start getting their $400 per kid bounties in the mail from the government over the next few weeks things might continue to improve.
