Jesus can't reduce anxiety. A little weed in delicious gummy form does though. And I like a well-made cocktail. I like to make said cocktails. I think you're willfully ignorant (and puritanical) if you think that people drink because they have some kind of void to fill. I could just as easily make the case that people engage in religion to fill a void. To Travis' point, you don't need Jesus to not be a dick.

I'd say that Jesus, by way of meditation and prayer, absolutely can reduce anxiety if you're a believer.

As far as getting drunk, I don't know how many people were at the wedding in Cana, but the bible says that Jesus turned six stone jars of water in to wine. That's around 900-1000 bottles, and the only reason he did it was that they had already been drinking and ran out.

After all, Jesus was way cool.

There is an answer for anxiety…

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

When will they start selling edibles and cannabis drinks? Everyone will be skipping and holding hands.

Yeah, it's big pharma. The problem with people who think that faith has all the answers don't seem to understand that one person's faith may be meaningless to others if they don't share that faith. A large portion of the country puts faith in the lies of a sociopath, and often in the name of their god. Worse, some go as far as to skip medical treatment because of faith. That doesn't work out. It's endemic to our culture that people now prioritize belief over that which can be proven right before them. No belief will lower my cholesterol, but rosuvastatin will.

A storm descends on a small town, and the downpour soon turns into a flood. As the waters rise, the local preacher kneels in prayer on the church porch, surrounded by water. By and by, one of the townsfolk comes up the street in a canoe.

"Better get in, Preacher. The waters are rising fast."

"No," says the preacher. "I have faith in the Lord. He will save me."

Still the waters rise. Now the preacher is up on the balcony, wringing his hands in supplication, when another guy zips up in a motorboat.

"Come on, Preacher. We need to get you out of here. The levee's gonna break any minute."

Once again, the preacher is unmoved. "I shall remain. The Lord will see me through."

After a while the levee breaks, and the flood rushes over the church until only the steeple remains above water. The preacher is up there, clinging to the cross, when a helicopter descends out of the clouds, and a state trooper calls down to him through a megaphone.

"Grab the ladder, Preacher. This is your last chance."

Once again, the preacher insists the Lord will deliver him.

And, predictably, he drowns.

A pious man, the preacher goes to heaven. After a while he gets an interview with God, and he asks the Almighty, "Lord, I had unwavering faith in you. Why didn't you deliver me from that flood?"

God shakes his head. "What did you want from me? I sent you two boats and a helicopter."

Oh, Jesus.

I'll take you seriously when you're as mad about pork and shellfish as you are about alcohol. (See also gays/divorce, abortion/early childhood support, etc. etc. etc.).
And not credential dropping, but just to fast forward through the first few exchanges of this conversation, I am a pastor and have been for 20 years. I very rarely drink (maybe once a year), and I've seen alcohol destroy my extended family, but I've also seen many people enjoy it responsibly. Plus the thing where Jesus drank...

I wish I could upvote that twice Andy. Once for talking logically about a divisive topic, and once for the blasphemy. hashtagwinkeyfaceorsomething

Jesus never rode a roller coaster.™

This is the type of crowd these parks choose to attract with these gory events. So the parks know what is going to happen. The crowd is so bad at some of these parks that customers cannot exit and re-enter the park or bring in bags

If it had rained, this never would have happened.

I’m just surprised no one pulled out their ACE card. That would’ve shut the whole thing down instantly.

So first it was everyone who drinks alcohol is a devil worshiper in search of fights. Now its everyone who enjoys haunts is a problem waiting to happen. Seems to me life is a lot more nuanced than that.

If Cedar Point needed rain, they would have had it already.
