Silenced B&M's

Where exactly is the sand? Is it in the rails, the spine, or the supports?

AC?, RB?, MF?, DD?, PR? Who can keep track of it all?
I'm pretty sure it's in the rails.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the spine is filled. The hollow spine is what creates the "roar".

...or am I totally off here? :)

No, I think you nailed it. The supports are often filled with sand along with the hollow track spine. DP's Talon had both done, to my knowledge, unless somebody else says otherwise ;)
Talon had it done, but I remember a ride construction site saying it had sand in the rails. That was a while ago, so I don't have the link anymore...

SfMW's Medusa has sand as well, that is why, if you were to pass buy it with your eyes closed, you wouldn't even know it was there.
Yes I agree, you don't even know Talon is running until you go up to the fence in the helix section and it feels like an F5 tornado is about to blow you over. You are only a few feet from the train when it goes by.

Actully it's depends on how the coaster is designed, for instance Hulk is only noise damped in the first drop after the zero g roll.

Talon is damped all the way through, both in the spine and supports. However it costs pretty much, a couple of million$ on the big ones, if not more...

yea, i know for a fact hulk wasnt silenced. could here that anywhere in the park. yet what confuses me is why dueling dragons is silenced, but hulk wasnt. dueling dragons didnt have sand in the spine though, instead, gravel in the supports.

heres a link to what i was talking about...

not official, but joel seems to know what he is talking about.

I hope this doesn't become a trend with B&M coasters in the future. I can't imagine Montu without that incredible roar.....it's the sound that makes you say to yourself, "THIS is a B&M coaster!"
I think the only reason they silenced Talon was because the "goodly neighbors" were complainingabout the noise.
how could anyone forget kraken?! the box spine of that is filled with sand

There is a big difference between the roar and the irritating noise that I hear from Mantis. I really with they could do something to that.

i heard once that they filled the suppors or track with foam but i dunno if this actually happened anywhere. Batman:Dark Knight at SFNE was extremely silent - you could clearly hear the wheels sqeaking on the new track.
Hulk makes one of the most interesting sounds i have ever heard. Like a swarm of bees is a good way to describe it. One coaster i can think of that seems like they made it louder is Top Gun The Jet Coaster, that thing is deafening.

What exactly are you talking about? Hulk isn't dampened, silenced OR quieted. It's quite a roar coming down that hill out of the zero G roll. I have a video of the first part of the ride filmed from the bridge.

Sorrrrrrrry folks! Parks closed. The moose out front should have told you.

I was thinking that too, Homey. I was just at IOA last month and stood on that bridge right below the zero-G roll and in front of the bottom of the first hill that takes you up to the cobra roll. That sucker sounded pretty loud to me!

Hulk isn't dampened at all. But, DD has filled supports and spines and noise dampening walls to block out the screams :)

The lastest coaster to be sand filled is Xcelerator. It's track was sand filled and capped just before the trains were brought in.

Well, not at all surprised by KBF's dampening of Xcelerator....talk about your "bad neighbor policy". You'd think all those businesses nearby would rather not have all the additional traffic Knott's brings in....

Hulk's "angry swarm of bees" is patented, BTW....;)

Has Intamin damped any other coasters? I find it hard to believe that they filled filled the top hat with sand considering the amount of unsupported track there is.
