Signature line limit

I think there should be a limit for how many lines you can have on your sig. I mean c'mon skysox has at least 8 lines on his and countless others the same.
Accually, it wouldn't be a problem if people would read the FAQ. It states right there that it must be 3 lines or less.

It makes me wonder why people can't read...

When the next version of POP Forums comes out (in a few weeks), you won't be able to post until you've read the terms of service. Hopefully that will help.

Will existing members have to reread the FAQ in order to continue posting? I think that would be a good way to insure the everyone who is an active member has read the FAQ, even if they have been here for a good while. For those individuals who have read them and have no problems, it shouldn't be a big deal, either.

Wow, I didn't realize that you would be done so soon! From the way you described it, I thought it would be months! I'm really looking forward to it, and the new features that will come with it. We all appreciate all of the hard work and long hours you must be putting into it.

Yes. Here's how it works:

Every member record will have a new "true or false" field attached to it, indicating whether or not they've read it. The admin can at any time set everyone's record to false.

When you haven't read it and clicked "I agree," you are bumped to an "in between" page with the TOS on it. Once you've agreed, your post goes live and you're back to participating.

The reason they're moving along quickly is because I've locked myself in the office, Steph is away at a biology conference, the DirecTV music is loud and I'm focused. The beers are unfortunately slowing me down this evening.

The other thing we'll be adding is post quotas that we may implement on an individual basis. So instead of nuking a member because they're noisy, we can train them by limiting how much they post, getting them to understand how to make each post count. This should cut down on the "me too" posts.

Also, you'll find favorite topic lists, member-to-member topics, etc. Trust me, this will be the best version of the forums yet.

Now excuse me while I grab another beverage...

I guess he did, he did write the FAQ, didn't he?

Jeff, I am using this as a point for maybe adding another part of the FAQ. How about adding a section saying before replying to any thread, you read the whole thread carefully? I know it couldn't be enforced, but it would cut down on repeat posts from different people.

Wow, sounds like Version 5 will be pretty darn cool. I might just have to finally buy it...

Hopefully makeing everyone view TOS will help new members understand the way things work around here. I have always be a "fan" of the post quota idea. I hate it when someone starts a topic then two minutes later asks why no one replies.

Yes, or possibly a limitation that does not allow members to post twice in a row. I find that many people do not understand the "edit" feature of the forums. Often times, if they come up with something they forgot in their first post, they make a new post saying something like, "Oh, and one more thing...". Also, if people accidentally double or triple post, they often post again saying something to the effect of, "Oops! Sorry I double posted!", instead of just going back and deleting the multiple posts.

That's a really good point -- I've seen it happen a lot. Perhaps that could be a section of the FAQ? (Sorry if it already is, I DID read them, awhile ago...)

Yup, it's in there.

From The FAQ Section:
6. Editing your post
If you find that once you have submitted your reply or message to the forums and you notice a mistake, or left something out, you can click on “edit” above your post to correct the error. Making another post with the correction leaves that topic thread disorganized.

Unfortunately, I really don't think that there will ever be a total solution to these problems. While making people agree to the TOS, and read the FAQ will significantly help, you can be sure that a number of people will agree without ever actually reading it, or will simply skim it over. That is why I think that a limitations like the one I suggested will ensure the rules are followed, by making it impossible not to.
