Shanghai Disneyland will close in effort to contain coronavirus

Posted | Contributed by Tekwardo

Shanghai Disneyland will close its gates on Saturday in an effort to stop the spread of a new SARS-like virus that has killed 26 people and sickened at least 881, primarily in China. It’s not known when the theme park may reopen.

The science suggests that obsessive cleaning of things is probably not the greatest use of anyone's time. I wonder if theme parks will consider that relative to some of the hose-downs of rides.

I thought this was interesting, it's the first I've seen someone commit to or suggest some sort of vaccine timeline beyond "distributed by need" - and while it's not groundbreaking, it's more info than I've seen previously.

Phase 4 am I.

Teacher here, so theoretically phase 2. Haven't been and have no plans to be in a classroom anytime soon, so maybe phase 4? Pastor, also so I wonder if that counts as phase 3? Maybe I just get it all 3 times?

Aww, congratulations RC!

My 74 year old father in law got a message from his doctor asking if he wanted to be on the vaccine distribution list. He said yes.

I wish there was another phase before 4 of people willing to jump start the travel economy because I am in that category. :)

Depending on what is considered "signifcantly" or "moderately" higher risk our family of four has two in either phase 1b or 2, one in phase 3 and one in phase 4.

^ Well, according to the CDC a BMI over 30 is considered to be increased risk. I would think that covers way more than 30% percent of the US population.

Of course, anyone can get into Phase 2. Just knock off a liquor store. Not really sure how I feel about that......

Actually, I know exactly how I feel about that.

Maybe easeir to get fat?

I'm technically obese. I wonder if I get to fast pass my way in.

Obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure: the trifecta of comorbidities. On that chart I would qualify for 2, possibly even 1b.

That said...let me emphasize I am decidedly not anti-vaccine, in spite of my usual failure to get a flu shot (so far I've been lucky, I guess....), but my attitude on something as rushed as this is tempered by, "...but you go first." So while I might be eligible in the early phases, I might be inclined to wait for the later ones...

Seems like the most appropriate thing to do on Thanksgiving would be go the WDW...

Also the Rider busting back onto this thread with the opener "So how are the old hotspots doing?" seems mildly appropriate if not amusing.

I don't think Trump had too terrible an idea with the mobilizing of the military domestically to distribute the vaccine. (Though he seemed to abandone it with all other work now.) Something that could fit in their wheelhouse on quick notice. Or maybe we just do need the Disney queue tech...

I see a formed line the size of Dragster tunnel-to-station and growing every day outside the clinic here just for testing. Even if there is skepticism and phasing, I imagine testing is only a small percentage of pop. compared to those up for the vaccine

40k+ people in each trial already went first. That's why they're seeking approval now.

Beat me to it. That's exactly what "phase three trial" means.

The timeline is condensed but that’s the point of mRNA vaccines. You don’t need to spend time growing/ killing the virus in eggs and there was no mystery to solve. We probably knew the genetic makeup of the virus before we knew how it was spreading.

So how’s this whole vaccine distribution going to play out?

Are we going to do it saw style where we beat each other to death for the limited supply?

Or is it going to be political and we will have a giant argument about how we shouldn’t be vaccinated and then how we should because it’s our duty, and then some presidents names will be thrown around?

Or does this whole situation just sunset into obscurity while we search for a new topic to politicize and generate tv ratings and such?

No. We'll have a number of studies, models, and predictions (many already going/done) about what will be the most effective way to distribute the vaccine to balance things like preventing transmission with saving lives. They will be based on expert consensus, facts, and reality. We will come to a decision which may not be perfect, but will be good. Many people will resist for a variety of reasons, but on the whole we will see the transmission rates go down slowly but steadily.

Science will rule the day, as it always does, because it doesn't care what you think. The sooner we come to terms with that, the more lives and jobs we will save. And as always, the privileged will have benefited from the sacrifice of the less fortunate, but deny it, claim credit for it, and then forget it.
