Shanghai Disney closed again with Chinese zero-Covid policy

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Shanghai Disney has become the latest high-profile venue to shut its gates thanks to China's strict zero-Covid policy, trapping visitors inside. People have been told they will not be allowed out of the theme park until they can show a negative test. It comes after Shanghai reported 10 locally transmitted cases on Saturday.

If their vaccination rate is as heroic as they claim, then what's the point of this insane policy? Here we have anti-vax or people who otherwise did not vaccinate, and they're prone to death because that's their choice. But we've had enough participation to keep it relatively under control or at least non-hospitalized. (It remains to be seen if enough people will get the bivalent variety to prevent a serious wave this winter.) The point is, their economy continues to contract while things they import (soybeans, oil) keep getting more expensive. What they're doing isn't sustainable, and again, if the vaccination rates are high, fatalities should be mostly preventable.

At some point, I wonder if it's just "because autocracy" and not actually any sane, reasoned plan.

It really seems that way, and/or nobody who can or will say "this doesn't make sense."

At one point (sometime in the summer, I think), their vaccines were not as effective as the ones the rest of the world is using. They were just testing their first mRNA vaccines. They also had low booster rates for 60+ and 80+ age groups.

Zero Covid wasn't sustainable back when more people were suggesting it. Every country that at one point was pursuing it has since abandoned it (other than China).

Zero tolerance works better in autocratic countries but ultimately not by much. Looking forward, when do they think lockdowns would end? Not as big an issue for autocratic governments.

Damn. I had just booked my flight to Shanghai.

Isn't it interesting though that autocracy can be that, or no plan at all?

As I understand it, given the obvious impossibility of Zero COVID, if it ends then it de-facto proves the leadership was wrong. And leadership in China cannot be wrong. Even worse, the longer it goes on, the more wrong leadership will prove to have been, meaning the longer it goes on, the greater the incentive to take it further, even though any sane person (presumably including those forcing such an insane policy) knows that it's at best an exercise in futility, and at worst an exercise in economic suicide. Maybe political suicide as well, which could get really messy.

This is what happens in the absence of meaningful opposition over the long term.

Which is one of the problems here. Lies and bull**** have little consequence, even when it is intended to compromise democracy. These are strange times.

Vater, I hear you. I have more than six years left on my 10-year tourist visa, and I'm betting I won't ever use it again. I just can't see myself going to PRC under the current wildly unpredictable conditions. That probably goes for Hong Kong too. I have been to SHDL, but never made it to HKDL.

Yay! Only 294 pages to go!

Its really just 5 more pages to go followed by 289 pages of repeating everything.

Yeah. Just 5 pages of fresh material and then 289 pages of repetition.

5 pages would have been nice. We didn't even make it past the 2nd post in this one.

I regret nothing.

I'm still being required to wear a mask all day at work and I don't work in healthcare and I'm in the U.S. Three years ago I was really hopeful that by now I would not be dripping sweat down my face all day and taking extra antianxiety medication to get through the day because of masks but here I am. Our superintendent appears to be on the zero covid or bust team.

Actor's Equity is still using a mask protocol for performers and crew, when they're not on stage. Come to think of it, the band for Six was masked as well when it crossed through Orlando. Audiences are not required, at least here. I kind of understand it in that case, because they only have so many alternates, and they're in pretty close quarters.

I had no idea that mask policies were still a thing anywhere. I see an occasional student wearing one, but that's about it.

Promoter of fog.

My dad is in an assisted living facility and they require employees and visitors to wear masks. Doctors offices also require masks at least Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals for doctors, staff and patients/visitors.
