Shanghai Disney closed again with Chinese zero-Covid policy

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Shanghai Disney has become the latest high-profile venue to shut its gates thanks to China's strict zero-Covid policy, trapping visitors inside. People have been told they will not be allowed out of the theme park until they can show a negative test. It comes after Shanghai reported 10 locally transmitted cases on Saturday.

That makes sense. I should have been more specific; outside of hospitals/healthcare. Even though our dentist and orthodontist dropped it awhile ago, a well-visit at at the hospital still requires it.

"Attention guests, you must remain on It's a Small World until you test negative".

Promoter of fog.

My company is sending technician to a hospital tomorrow (I guess technically later today) to fix one of our devices and he is required to not only wear a mask, but also have a recent negative COVID test, be vaccinated, and have a flu shot before he can enter. Those are easily the strictest requirements we've seen from any of our clients (most of which are hospitals).

I was in a hospital yesterday for a few hours. I hadn’t been in one in a while, and was surprised at how normal everything is now. No masks, no plastic barricades, nothing.

I was sitting between various lobbies and the cafeteria with my laptop, and I saw maybe 3 patients come in with masks.

The only place I saw any partitions was when I walked by the retail pharmacy, and I think those have always been there.

No objections from the accounting department of the hospital requiring tests/vaccines/boosters/flu shots I am sure.

We are the only school in our county requiring staff to be masked. There is a major employee (lack of) morale issue going on and this week there was a big meeting with the county employees (there are county and multiple school districts working within the program) where the superintendent basically paraded some people through with outdated statistics and talked condescendingly to people and to justify her position. It hasn't gone over well. As much as I love this building I'm debating whether or not I should try to get myself moved to a building within my home district because as of this week I've lost any hope I had of getting my face back any time this school year or even beyond then. It's very frustrating because if it wasn't for this one issue being a problem for me the position was perfect.

That's fairly ridiculous. The science doesn't support that position at all, especially if the staff is widely vaccinated and boosted.

^And if we have to call off work because of sniffles we aren't allowed back for 10 days unless we can produce a negative PCR test. Students can come back pretty much whenever if they wear a mask. When asked why the kids aren't held to the same standard staff was told basically because it is no longer the CDC recommendation and so they can't make the students adhere to it but they can make us do it. It's been a while since I've worked somewhere that had a "leader" trying so hard to kill staff morale intentionally.

Is that 10 days paid? Because I'd have sniffles A LOT.

Hi

Nope, unpaid but with me doing what was two jobs because someone retired over the summer and the position wasn't filled I'm awfully tired lately so I opted for the unpaid 10 day vacay last bad cold I got.

I don't understand the mask mandate. The CDC is not mandating them so why is your boss? Not sure what their basis is for that.

Do you have a local union? If so, I would certainly bring your concerns to your AR, if you haven't done so already. While they can't directly change the masking policy union leadership can certainly lean on administration to reconsider.

There really isn't a great justification for requiring staff to wear masks anymore. With availability of vaccines and widespread immunity (granted it's on a slider) I feel like we are pretty much on our own now.

I don't currently have any students who wear a mask. It's been great seeing smiling faces and having students see my numerous facial expressions. We communicate a great deal without saying a word.

^^Control freak with a savior complex I guess. One of the teachers did try to get the union involved and was brushed off and told they can't do anything. The newest memo had the 6 foot wording and that we could take the mask off if we would be at least 6 feet from students. One of the teachers measured 6 feet from her desk and smartboard and taped a line on the floor and moved all the desks behind it. Said if admin was going to play games she could too. Unfortunately the nature of my particular job requires me to be within 6 feet of a student pretty much all day because I work one on one, or more like one on two this year.

What is their ability to enforce things? With no CDC guidance on masks or 6 feet in existence anymore (at least not that I can find) what is the basis for the rules?

Requiring masks goes way beyond CDC, and likely DPH, recommendations at this point. Requiring staff to take 10 days of unpaid sick time is way beyond recommendations as well. Last I checked CDC recommendations were stay home for five days since the start of symptoms and mask for five, but that is after a positive test.

Both of these constitute a change in working conditions and should necessitate opening up collective bargaining. Without knowing the specifics of your collective bargaining agreement my gut says your union leadership is wrong on this and needs to be pressed. Depending on labor laws in your state they may be able to file a grievance. They can certainly sign up to speak during public comment at school board meetings as well. The superintendent has bosses too.

Lord. Sounds like Abbott Elementary.
Paisley, aren’t you near me? I know educators all over central Ohio and no one, literally no one, is doing all that, unless maybe under severe extenuating circumstances.
Get loud.

I'm farther north, the really west end of the Cleveland area.

Yesterday, 12/1 is the anniversary of the first known (at the time) patient to enter a Wuhan hospital complaining of flu-like symptoms. Later declaration of COVID as an emerging pathogen and health issue would happen weeks later.

i have returned to this thread many times to re-read how things played out in those first few weeks leading up to the general shutdown in the US on March 12th. If you have the time it’s worth it to go back and read from the beginning

It's crazy, right? Oppressed speech and communism don't cause an uprising, but a bizarre non-sensible quarantine policy does it.
