SF Great America - Need some facts...any help?

I dont believe there is such a lifespan for wooden coasters. I have seen coasters that have been up since the 50's even late twenties. But with size and all, it might matter, those are not too big.
KTS: Yeah, the shooting gallery was actually right across from the Yukon Yahoo. Oh and that wasnt the *only* place that ride was. They later moved it to Orleans Place and sat it in the place of the old Sky Ride and re-christened it *drumroll* "Delta Flyer"! Then they took yoga classes till they gained the flexibility to insert their cranium into their rectum and replaced the ride with "Condor".

3. Southern Cross was the sky ride that had a required round trip. It left from Orleans Place and went out to a turnaround near where Splashwater Falls is located today, then returned-----------------

Actually the turn around was not near where Splash Water Falls is, it was out in the middle of nowhere by the Eagle, as seen in this picture

Millennium, thanks for the correction. It has been too long for me to remember the Southern Cross exactly.

Wow, GREAT memories guys ... I guess I only remember the sky ride from Orleans to (what is now) the funnel cake foundry ... actually, I remember my Uncle getting stuck up in the air on that one for about an hour one night. So, the one end was by the train station in the back of the park (funnel cake place)...the other end was in Orleans where the Condor is currently, right? What was put in that location between the dismantling of the sky ride and the Condor....was it some sort of flat ride--I recall some type of spinning ride--but there was a reference (in this thread) to a shooting gallery there?

Do you guys remember when the ride(s) were shut down and then taken down? I really can put a finger on the year.

I tell you, that damn SF just loves to suck the life out of me...first they killed those rides, then the Sky Whirl -- bastards. I may have to contact SF and see if I can purchase one of the birdcages from the beloved Sky Whirl for my backyard! ;) Man, I miss the Sky Whirl, good times.

Is it true that the entrance to American Eagle used to be a circus?
i think they used to have a circus type show in the eagle pavillion area

Shockwave you Nazi
(the first drop was awesome) other than that uhhhhh good riddance

Yes, that was a circus when Marriott owned it.

Ric Flair was hitting on the female host, he told her - "Space Mountain may be the oldest ride in the park, but it has the longest line." WOOOOO!

Who remembers when the Wilderness theatre used to be a dolphin show and later turned into a high diving show?

Good times, good times!!!!!

(you guys will laugh at this...)

The first time I went to Great America I was about 6 or 7. We went on the sky ride, not sure which one though. All's I remember is starting to cry when it took off because I was terrified of heights. When I opened my eyes, we were going over the Tidal Wave, it was love at first sight, and I was ok. Which one went over the Tidal Wave?

Answer to 10: Viper/Tidal Wave is in the SFOG employee parking lot, rusting. The Park claims that Nobody has made a move to purchase it.

Does anybody know were I can see brochures from "Marriott's Great America"

The one that went over the Tidal Wave would be the Southern Cross.

To whomever asked about the Sky Trek Tower, it was actually brokered by Intamin (like most of the Schwarzkopf rides there) but built by a company called Metalbau (sp?). I beleive they are located in Austria or Switzerland and their plate is still above both sets of doors on the tower.

Actually this is confusing - The sky ride was called the Delta Flyer. I believe when Shock Wave was installed, the dismantled the Delta Flyer and put in a Bayurn Curve also called the Delta Flyer (88 I think). It was actually a pretty fun flat ride that involved bobsled cars that sped around this curved circular track. The Condor replaced it in 91. The shooting gallery was in Yukon, near where Delta Flyer #2 originally was located prior to its move, under the name Yukon Yahoo.

There will be a water park built in Gurnee in the next several years, but it will not be associated with Six Flags. This comes to me from a highly involved Gurnee resident.

Great SFGAm info in this thread...

I am needing a little more clarification on a few things though...

The Columbia Carousel....was that really built from scratch? I coulda sworn that it came from "somewhere".....but I guess that fact that the Illinois park has the same carousel as it's sister in California sort of suggests that they were built for Marriott back in the day.

As far as the water park, didn't Gurnee just build a park district run water park down Grand Avenue somewhere? I know that park district parks are never really seen as competition for commercial ones.....just find it odd that Gurnee would put one up, then "another" company would build one .... ALL without Six Flags trying to get in on the action. Seems like a no-brainer for Six Flags to have their fingers in any new water park. But, as always, I could be completely off base.

Anyways, thanks again to all who helped take this stroll "back in the day" at good ole Great America.

The carousel in front is 'new,' and not from anywhere. The carousel in the back of the park is very old, though, I think it came from somewhere in Texas. Anyone know for sure?

MilleniumForce6279, in the 1979 brochure, is that SUSHI?!

Man, how cool would it be to have food like that in the park now!

(Of course with the way prices have sky-rocketed, each roll would have to come with a mortgage application!)
