Second orca for Six Flags Worlds of Adventure in limbo

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The federal government improperly issued a permit to Six Flags Worlds of Adventure to import a killer whale from Argentina, according to a complaint filed in federal court by several animal-rights groups. The orca is still in Argentina, where that government has not issued an export permit and is examining how it was captured. Officials at the Mundo Marino aquarium in Buenos Aires said Kshamenk, a 10-year-old male, was stranded in 1992. But the Humane Society of the United States, Earth Island Institute in San Francisco and the Wild Earth Foundation in Argentina say the orca was intentionally grounded and should have been released. Six Flags is not a named party in the suit.

Anyone know how to pronounce that name? One of the the local newspapers referred to the whale as 'Shemank.' Is that a clue how to say the name?

shore-ka

Since Jeff made Track Record a "perk" for CB members i'll just post my count here: Coasters:99 Parks:14

Shouka (there is no 'R' in her name!)

Pronounced Shoe- ka.

Kshamank pronounced Sha- mane- k.

I hope he is allowed to come to Ohio- these protesters are thinking more about their own persoanl, political and moral objections to captivity than the whale's welfare. Kshamank has been in an aquarium for 10 years- and currently he is the only Orca there.

Even if he does not come to Ohio- that does NOT mean that he will be released back inot the ocean (which many articles have infered). It takes tons and tons and tons and tons of money and time to release a zoological animal into the ocean (and it has never been successfully done might add- Keiko aka free willy is still in a sea pen up in Iceland- and his projects' funinding is running out fast!). For the argentina whale- no companies have offered to fund his release (well none with the proper financial resources).

If he des not come to Ohio he will stay in Argentina in an aquarium. That would suck- he has a great opp. to join another whale in an developing park. There he can be with another Orca- and they can start teir own family- but instead these protesters want him to stay alone in Argentina? They are butting thier own moral beliefs over any sence of reason or Kshamk's over-all welfare.
