SDC to build Celebration City in Branson

Posted | Contributed by Viper423

The Silver Dollar City Corporation (SDC) is announcing Celebration City, a new forty million-dollar, multi-faceted theme park for Branson, Missouri. The park will highlight some of the most colorful and entertaining eras of 20th Century America and is scheduled to open in late Spring 2003 on a 112-acre parcel just off Highway 76, formerly the site of Branson USA. The $40 million park will have 24 rides, including a 100-foot tall wooden coaster from Great Coasters International.

Yeah, I live in Kansas City, and I agree with SawBlade. WOF DOES need a coaster badly. I also consider SDC and Celebration City to be my "almost hometown parks." Can't wait to ride that GCI woodie. I'll take GCI over CCI any day.

The Windstorm (Firestorm as Branson USA called it) I'm guessing will be given a complete overhaul/rehab. Still not sure if the KMG Afterburner (Fireball) will make a reapperance or if it is gone for good. It used to sit just to the right of the giant wheel as you look at the artist rendering and was not included in the auction. Anybody know where the Zyklon is or heading to?

The layout for that wooden rollercoaster is one that GCI had on display at IAAPA way back in 1999...so the design was already finished long ago. Perhaps all SDC had to do was "buy" the plans and pay for materials and labor. They could have done this very recently if they really needed to...although I have a feeling this wasn't the case. You can see photos of the model that was on display at the following site:

I wonder what the name will be for the woodie.

Fireball may be moved to a different area, but you are correct in that it wasn't auctioined off.

This should heaten up the "coaster wars" in Missouri for sure. You can expect SFSTL and WOF to beef up their coaster lineups in the coming years.

Does anybody else besides me think that Celebration City sounds better than City Nights?

Yeah, it doesn't limit the park to being open just during the night. On the news in Springfield they showed where it would be built, and all of the wood for the ride. There is a lot of wood! I will try to go down there every other week during the winter and post pictures of construction. ACEerCG, how did you notice that?
WOOO HOOOO!!!! That's all I can say. This is so exciting. I live 2 hours away. I am going there on opening day. I think SDC has a winner on its hands. I am glad they didn't build a "gimmick" coaster. (You know the world's tallest, fastest blah blah blah) Instead they picked something that will fix nicely into that area. It will be nice to look at as you come off that mountain and head into the city.

It's wood! IM THERE!

:)

CoasterCory, did you go to the auction? I have a feeling there were almost as many coaster/park enthusiasts at it as there were industry people buying rides.

CoasterBill42, most likely will bump into you down there sometime looking at stuff (from public lands and thoroughfares) as I am about 40 miles north in Springfield so if you see a big bearded guy be sure to say hello.

ACEerCG, how did you notice that?

I'm just good like that :o)

A friend pointed it out to me as we both remembered GCI already having designed one layout with a 360-degree spiral drop. I just did a search to find the pictures of the model.

KDEB, local FOX affiliate, just had a segement on the park and Mr Bob Montgomery said that the new coaster is going to be in the section of the park themed to Route 66 and the '50s. Mr Montgomery also stated that the new park would open in the afternoon and be open till later in the night compared to Silver Dollar City. SDC closes at 7pm during the summer so this makes sense as you can hit SDC during the day and CCity at night. Found it interesting that the Dragon kiddie coaster (Wisdom Industries) which was sold at the auction is still sitting in the same place, so, guessing the buyer backed out or could not round up the money.

The model of the GCI coaster looks amazing, I will definitely be there next year for my first trip to SDC and CCity

Jimbo: No, I didn't go to the auction, but I did read about the auction at the worldsoffun.org boards.

That layout looks wicked, but it looks like it could use some more airtime hills. I wonder if they will be open in November/December like SDC is.

Why wouldn't they be. Branson itself has a winter event thing going on in Nov and Dec, it only makes since to have this park open too. BUSA was, and so was Mutton Hollow.

GO HUSKERS!

I'm there in 2003 ;). What type of rides would be there? Will S&S make apperinces? I think a turbo drop or space shot would be a nice addition also. I'm very interested in riding GCI because I havent been on any yet.

As for CCity being open during the winter like SDC. The press releases says "The new park’s season will run from spring through fall. ", but, such stuff can change depending on demand, weather, etc.
