Schwarzkopf dies of Parkinson's Disease complications

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Anton Schwarzkopf, known for his innovative steel coasters, dies Monday morning following a 15-year battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Schwarzkopf began building coasters in the Sixties, and produced them for several decades, even enduring bankruptcy. He is perhaps best known for shuttle loops and an array of portable rides that include Jumbo Jets, Looping Stars and Wildcats.

His son Weiland now runs a new company with the Schwarzkopf name.

R.I.P Anton Schwarzkopf

The first RollerCoaster I ever rode on US soil was Montezoomas Revenge at KBF. It goes without saying that my Coaster bug started there with one of his best.
Although I won't get to ride Monty on my upcoming US trip, I'll ride your Scorpion at BGT in your honor!

Hey vacoasterfreak, I loved that ride at PKD, The King Cobra, My mother and I used to get on and off and on and off that ride. It was awesome! I sure missed it when they took it out! I now live here in Dallas, Texas and will remember him every time I step foot on the Shockwave at SFOT!

RIP Anton!!

TITAN CRAZED!!
Thank you Anton for your wonderful life and the memory of my very first loop on any roller coaster. (Jet Scream at SFSTL, which is now at SFAW I think under an assumed identity) Your coasters were not only thrill rides to the utmost, but picturesque works of art. May you ride that great lift hill to the sky my friend.

God please let SFKK get something this year. ANYTHING!!

My grandma has Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, so I know what his family must have went through. My first steel coaster was the Whizzer. Just like coasterdude16, thanks for getting me hooked. We will miss you Anton, For your on your way to a better place. Thanks for making some of the greatest coasters out there. Rest in Peace.
That's terrible! He made so many great rides. Mindbender at SFOG is still one of the best and it's about 25 years old! We'll all miss him. My prayers go out to his family.

SAD, SAD, SAD, my first coaster I remember was Big Bend at SFOT, during the early 1970's, then on Shockwave on opening day in 1978.
RIP Anton.

Schwarzkopf was a great designer! His death should encourage parks to save his masterpieces rather than removing them. Schwarzkopf's designs, IMO, are far better than the new, innovative designs of today. My next ride on a Schwarzkopf will be dedicated to him (I wish I knew when it would be). Maybe his son will follow in his footsteps.

*ACE, why not put a plaque in some parks about Schwarzkopf (Astroworld, Revolution - SFMM, Whizzer - SFGAm, Shockwave - SFOT, Mindbender - SFOG, etc.)?

Maybe I ain't so shy!
I'll be at SFGAm on Thursday, and we'll have him in mind as we ride Whizzer. This reminds me how much I miss Tidal Wave.
Sorry, Texas Tornado/Thriller is not in operable condition at the moment and can not cycle in Anton's memory. But Astroworld DOES have two other Schwarzkopf coasters, as many as any other park.

NOOO!!! Not Anton! He was the best designer still alive, besides B&M! How dreadfully SAD! I'll never be able to ride another Schwarzkopf again without shedding a tear. What a MISERABLE day in history... the day that Mr. Rollercoaster passed away! He will be deeply missed by all for many years to come. A&E should do one of their biographies on his life and his work. He was truly a modern legend, and one heck of a genius. So, does anyone know if he managed to finish that portable 9 inverter that he was working on? I was really looking forward to seeing it! Maybe if we all screamed loud enough, we could talk them into letting it tour America with the Eurostar or something. It sure would be nice to see more of his portables operating on US shores in his honor for a while, since Thriller (Texas Tornado) is just sitting on idle this season, and that's the only one I know of that's ever been to this country.
P.S. for Texcomet: My first coaster was the Big Bend too! What a rush! Too bad it met up with an untimely demise too. :(

RollerCoaster Database is doing a memorial thing. Go there, I guarentee you it will have the random coaster be a Schwarzkopf. I don't know how long that it is going to stay like that though.

It's very sad to hear of his death.
I really injoy riding some of his coaster that he made. For 1 Superman Ride Of Steel at SFA. It is the cool ride at SFA next to Batwing.
But I am so glad to hear that his son will take over the business and that way it's keeping it in the Family.
