Scheduled downtime today

Yes, the site was down today for awhile on purpose while I moved it to a new server. Yes, I know you had to login. Sorry for the delay, but unfortunately moving a site that's about 1 gig large doesn't happen very quickly.

This new provider seems a little faster, so we'll see how things go. Thank you for your patience.

What time does the water show start?

Whoops! Please delete my e-mail message cause' I was unaware!

We don't need no stinking badgers!

New server seems much faster to me. Instant page loads rather than waiting for some images to load.

Crap, I'll bet that means I have to edit my hosts file at work again... :)

(Our name server is getting hammered by worms attacking it from the residence halls, so to avoid all the DNS lookup failures, I put www.coasterbuzz.com into my hosts file so that my browser wouldn't have to ask the DNS for it...)

Does Capital have no worthwhile firewall, Dave, or did all the students bring their little pets in behind it when they moved in?

Yep its a lot faster.

John: We have a decent firewall. Trouble is, the residence hall network is *behind* it. So they brought in their infected XP machines and infected each other, and now want to know why we can't fix the Internet for them.

Ah, well, voluntary compliance with computer patching directives hasn't worked; I hear they're finally talking about unplugging people with infected computers. THAT will fix the problem.

The worms came out just barely early enough to clobber us right when school started. If the worms had come out two weeks later, we probably would not have seen them here.

Does the university have departmental firewalls? One campus-wide firewall doesn't work well, for exactly the reasons you note.

Even department-level firewalls have problems when a STAFF member takes a laptop home and gets it infected, but at least that's a smaller scale problem.

I work in housing at the University of Illinois and our computer services people did make a decision to deactivate the ports in every room until a student staff member visted the room and installed a patch. We did this at opening, so it was a little easier than it would be to do now, but it was effective.

And thanks for calling them residence halls (and not "dorms"). You made my day! :)

Now back to something related to coasters or at least this site about coasters... ;)

dawn, do "residence halls" have less of that stale beer smell, and less drunken debauchery?

If so, I'm glad I lived in a "dorm"....;)

On a more serious note, *recommending* patches is about as useful as a voluntary curfew...we've been instructed to shut down and reboot daily so that security can be handled on the server end....seems to be working much better, and we don't have as many people hitting the "reply to all" button when trying to send an e-mail to the admin ONLY....;)

I spoke with a faculty colleague at another university (could have been from UIUC, but I don't recall) who told me that they did exactly this, and it was very successful at improving compliance.

No, in fact it's the drunken bebauchery that keeps me employed... ;)

Edit: "bebauchery"? Apparently I'm drunk. ;) Well, you all knew what I meant anyway.
