It would have been Obviously easier for them to film the Vortex at Carowinds as the roller coaster in the movie, since the movie was made at the Biltmore Estate, which is about an hour from Carowinds, but for some reason, they chose to send the actors up to SFGAm. instead. I Guess it had something to do with the fact that Paramount owns Carowinds.
You know, I wondered the same thing but, I found it very strange, that if you watch the movie, when they are parked outside the Biltmore, if you look at the cars, the license plates say Illinois. Before I discovered what the Biltmore was, I just thought the whole movie took place in Illinois.

A quick search at IMDB provides us with the shooting locations for Richie Rich. Check out this link... it shows that the movie was filmed at the Biltmore estate in North Carolina, the Gary airport in Gary, Indiana as well as Great America... you can check it out here.
