Reporting Dead Site Links

Guide to the Island, http://www.guidetotheisland.com/

I think there's more, but the first two were older sites of mine that didn't make it and I just happened to notice that Guide to the Island closed down.

I have an "auto-check" to find dead links in the database. I guess it's time to run it again!

Yeah, I remember hearing that, but I just wanted to report my sites because I didn't plan on reopening them since I'm concentrating on something new now.

Exactly how does your auto-check work Jeff? Lots of sites hosted have the custom 404 errors so does it work around those?

I use an ASP component that gets a page and searches for the 404 HTTP error or the phrase "not found." It also waits for it to timeout. Anything that doesn't make it is queued for reapproval. Yes, some get through the filter, but most don't.

Ohh clever, I must say.

Hey Jeff, I remember you talking about a good reference book on asp. What was it again?

Thanks,
Jacob

Here's the thing though... you need to decide to do either ASP 3.0, which runs on Windows 2000 servers, or ASP.Net, which will run on .Net servers later this year. If it's a hobby, do 3.0 as it'll work on your home computer (Win2k) and most ISP's. Your stuff will still work on .Net later on. If you wanna go pro, you might as well get the .Net version and get your hands on the .Net framework any way you can (it's currently beta).
