Remnants

Shady Lake Park in Streetsboro, OH still had the sign standing and the Humprey Popcorn Manufacturing building the last time I was through the area. Part of the land, however, has been redeveloped (and I was 3 when I was there, so I don't remember the visit real well).

I know for sure that the main gate was demolished sometime last summer. I haven't really paid attention to whether or not the factory is still there.

The old Shady Lake arch has been removed.

Supposedly remains of the Puritas Springs Cyclone are still buried in the woods by the condos.

I'm from Baltimore, and my mother used to take me to Gwynn Oak when I was a kid. I remember going there after there'd been a fire. I was too scared to go very far. Hey, I was really little! I also remember getting the you-know-what scared out of me on the Wild Mouse.

Also, there's Enchanted Forest, out on Route 40, headed toward Frederick. I think most of the place still stands, although some (underground) rides were lost when a small strip shopping center was built in the old parking lot. Every now and then, stories surface that someone wants to rerstore and reopen what's left, but so far nothing's happened. I might actually drive out there this week and check it out. *** Edited 3/25/2007 2:09:30 PM UTC by ilovethewildone*** *** Edited 3/25/2007 2:13:52 PM UTC by ilovethewildone***

It's true, and they aren't buried that far. I was just by there this past weekend and if you know what you are looking for you can see the wood from the last drop into the ravine right from the road that goes down the hill into the Metroparks. You can only see it during the winter months. Once the leaves come out you have to trapse through the ravine to see it.

One other park with leftovers that I have personally seen is Angela Park in Drums, PA. It closed in 1987 but nothing has been developed on the site. You can still see all the concrete pads from the various circular rides, the pool is still there, and most of the miniature golf course is there, but beat up. I have pictures but I took them before I went digital and I don't have a scanner. I'll hopefully get back there this summer.

You have disturbed the forbidden temple, now-you-will-pay!!!

Riverview Park in Chicago

In a wooded area along the Chicago River North of Belmont you can still find the partially unburried troughs from the Chute-the-Chutes. Also the foundation from the Merry-Go-Round (now at SFoG)

Laugh your troubles away at Riverview, the world's largest amusement park.
Whalon Park in Lunenburg, MA

Mosr of the outbuilding ans the outer Permiter fence are still there.

Salt river park in richmond michigan, still has several buildins and some concrete left.

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

M:TR? (I'm surprised this thread went almost a full page before it was mentioned :) )

Does Williams Grove officially count yet?

Lakewood Park in Barnesville. The pillars from the entrance sign are still there. I haven't gone inside the old park yet though. I'm afraid of being suspected of attempted arson-- if there's anything else left to burn.

Although not a park, there's this thing too: http://www.switchbackgravityrr.org/

I know I'll regret this and feel dumb, but what is "M:TR"?

Moosh: The Ride...and that's ALL you need to know.
Beach Haven Park in Berwick, PA has a barn full of ride parts. There may be more remains hidden in the woods, but that's as far as my friends investigated.

Heritage USA--tons of stuff, I think the property is currently being redeveloped.

Some great pics here http://www.tommyandjames.net/heritageusa.html

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Did some research on Maryland's Enchanted Forest. Turns out a group of volunteers is trying to save what it can from the park, moving it to another site and restoring it, as well as trying to locate still-missing pieces that might be in collectors' hands,

The photos are amazing. They're having an Enchanted Forest weekend in April. Think I'll go relive some childhood memories... *** Edited 3/27/2007 2:34:09 AM UTC by ilovethewildone***

Anyone got any info on what became (is becoming?) of the rides from Pharaoh's in SoCal?

There were a number of parks in the Cherokee area. One, Cherokee Wonderland, was the home to two steam locomotives that wound up at Cedar Point. Here is where Albert and Victoria (now George R) started their secomd careers in the amusement industry.
GREAT THREAD! I never really thought about it, but there are a lot of amusement park remains hanging around!

I'm not sure, but I think there might be a few parts of Rocky Glen still in Moosic, PA. The coaster was demolished in 1995- long after the park closed- and that was likely because people kept setting fire to it.

I think there are quite a few parts of Mountain Park in Holyoke, MA still lingering. Nothing was done with that site aside from some demolition of major structures... things like the carousel building might still remain. Also in MA is the site of Lincoln Park where the Comet still stands (somewhat).

Glen Echo Park near Washington, DC is no longer an amusement park but its carousel survives and still operates there under the National Park Service. Some of the original buildings form the park still stand as well.

The Dentzel Carousel at Fair Park in Dallas, TX still stands as well and is used during the State Fair. The station from the old Comet roller coaster remains as well but is now used as a concession stand.

Arthur Bahl

I hear that Glen Echo Carousel is beautiful. One of these days I'll make sure to check it out.

It's not a defunct park but I think a picnic pavilion at Waldameer was once the loading station for the original Ravine Flyer. It would have been nice if that was incorporated into the design of the new Ravine Flyer II- if not as a loading station, perhaps as part of the queing area- but at least it's still part of the park.
