Reedy Creek replacement board says it's relegated to "maintaining roads and infrastructure"

Posted | Contributed by Touchdown

In their final days of controlling the Reedy Creek improvement district’s board, Disney executives and attorneys found a way to poison the authority of the incoming members appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and effectively oversee the area’s development.

I honestly think one of Desantis' strategies is to throw everything at the wall to pacify (or grow) his base, knowing that he will be well on his way to the White House before the lawsuits for so many of these egregious actions are resolved...many of them will he will lose if any of the experts I've heard speak on the matters are correct.

That's exactly the strategy. Say a bunch of ridiculous sh*t and watch the donations roll in. They used to be in the minority in the Republican Party but they have seen to take over the party. To be fair, there are some of the same noisy birds on the other side but they seem to be fewer in number.

Going off of the John Oliver story about “Thigh Food” DeSantis, not to mention numerous press conferences, it seems like he has a character flaw where he refuses to take criticism and will not let something go until he’s won. I think he may have met his match here as Disney has infinite money, an amazing legal team, and a company who fiercely maintains control of their property. I don’t predict this working out well for Capt Ahab DeSantis.

Touchdown:

Brian the first step to getting that to happen in WI occurs this coming Tuesday.

Step one: check.

(And holy cow but that was not close.)

No it wasn’t. Despite what the other candidate thought in his concession speech. Judge Janet managed to sweep the BOW counties a rare feat for a liberal. While Brown (Green Bay) leans slightly blue, Outagamie (Appleton) leans slightly red and Winnebago (Neenah-Menasha, Oshkosh) is a more heavy lean Red. She nearly swung one of the WOW counties (Ozaukee) which are the traditional stronghold of the GOP. Wisconsinites are ready for a change.

DeSantis escalates Disney dispute, eyes hotel taxes and road tolls

You can tell this is entirely about doing the right thing for Floridians and not at all about his national ambitions by the fact that he announced it in ... Michigan.

Hotel taxes are going to be passed on directly to customers and tolls will never pass through Disney's hands, but I guess he can say this is all Disney's fault because they aren't playing Song of the South on a loop on TVs in their hotel lobbies?

He can't just arbitrarily do those things, and even if he tried via the legislature, he's on record as positioning it as a retaliatory move. The courts wouldn't let it stand to target a specific business. Nothing as conservativey as trying to stick it to one of the largest businesses in your state.

A conservative Republican proposing a tax increase is about as man-bites-dog as it gets.

Middle aged man yells at cloud.

Love this nugget. Small government at work:

"DeSantis has previously suggested that in retaliation for Disney's maneuvering, the state would consider taking over inspections on the company's properties. CNN previously reported that DeSantis' office had instructed the district to halt pool inspections."

I was at least marginally impressed that a Twitter thread on the subject included a "doesn't Disney already inspect things?" in the comments.

I read it to mean that the state would be taking over the pool inspections. Did I read it wrong?

I figured that the retaliation part would be in the state's delay in certifying the pools, which would mean that people would not be able to swim. In the very short term, yes people would be mad at Disney because they cannot use the pools, but how long do you think it will take Disney to place very large signs noting that the reason that the pool is closed is because the state has not inspected the pool. I would imagine that Disney would even be so kind as to put the state inspectors office phone number on the sign as well.

Although I suppose there is a money aspect about the retaliation as well. The state is going to charge for the inspections. And Disney will pass along the cost to the consumer.

Seems to be a stupid fight.

It's all talk. The district would be sued immediately and any attempt to block Disney from conducting it's business would be laughed out of court.

You know he is playing to his base when he starts to threaten building a prison on District land. I was talking to someone yesterday about how disappointed I am in him. His first six months he was behaving and acting like a governor I could respect. He even took some "anti-Republican" environmentally friendly positions because I truly believe he knew the environment was a pretty important asset to Florida.

Disney is still one of our greatest assets and to suggest a prison on their property as retaliation against perhaps their single most significant corporation in all the State is just mouth dropping. What happened to the party that was once pro-business?

Here's a youtube video of lawyer discussing / summarizing the Disney vs DeSantis feud.

One other wrinkle in all this, the Senate still hasn’t approved the new boards positions. Legislative Session is nearly done.

Ronald Reagan. Or was that a rhetorical question?

Reagan kind of ruined it for everyone, because he ran on a platform of sowing distrust in government, which is ironic since he was government. Remember, "I'm from the government, I'm here to help?" Government can solve problems, and in most other countries, there is trust and accountability to do that.

Chris Christie: "I don't think Ron DeSantis is a conservative." Yeah, no kidding. That term was co-opted by nutty autocrats and fascists years ago. And the thing is, "classic" conservatives like Christie let it happen.

Jeff - Editor - CoasterBuzz.com - My Blog

Agreed. Chris Christie wouldn't bother me much if he hadn't helped cause a lot of this.
