Re: Personal Photos

I tried to upload my personal photo tonight, but the image began by being WAY too big, and then it was rejected because the file size was too big. When I tried to crop the image and fit it under the 25K limit, the image was highly blurred and had absolutely no background. Can anyone help me out as to how I can get a decent photo (like Jeff's) up?

If you wish, e-mail the pic to me and I'll give it a shot with my software..

Rather than cropping, perhaps try resizing, or even better, resampling, the image.

If you need a quick-and-dirty shareware program to do the trick, I recommend IrfanView, one of the programs I use for the images on my site. (Along with PhotoShop, which cost me quite a bit more money ;) )

Maybe scan the photo in a smaller "DPI," which is on a Canon Scanner. If you don't have a Canon Scanner, then I can't help. Sorry :(

GregLeg...what do you mean by resampling? I already scanned my image and I need to know where to go from here; much help would be appreciated!

BTW, I scanned the image with a lower DPI and, quite frankly, it looks like s**t. It's all blurry and unclear.

Scan at a high DPI. Then take the image file and load it in a program like IrfanView. If you have a scanner, it probably included some image editing software.

First crop the image until it shows the content you want. Don't worry if it's still too big for CoasterBuzz, we'll fix that in a second.

Now we'll resize it. This involves telling the software that you want this picture, only a bit smaller on the screen. "Resampling" is a slower method of doing this which takes more time to analyze the picture, but looks better in the end. I'm not sure what software you're using, but in IrfanView that would be Edit, Resize/Resample. Select a width under 300 pixels, and you should be set. If the file is still too large size-wise (greater than 25K), you can try saving it with a higher compression ratio (should be an option in the Save function -- higher quality means bigger filesize), but I always save that as a last resort as JPEG compression can look pretty bad.

I did what you said and uploaded the photo...it looks pretty good! I even used IrfanView's sharpening thing to make the image look clear without it looking like it came from a magazine. Thanks for all your help!
