RCT 2 ON WINDOWS VISTA

Hi all. I just got a new computer with windows vista and am having trouble installing rct 2. I get a message that install wizard won't work. Anybody els tried this game with this windows edition. If so any tips?

Is it possible that the Windows Installer is prompting you to answer if the installation completed successfully?

If so I would answer the question that the program installed anyways. I would test out RCT2 by going through your start menu.

I am running Vista Home Premium BTW w/ both expansion packs.

Good luck!

The message I'm getting reads:

The InstallShield Engine(iKernel.exe) could not be launched.

Class not registered

Jeff do you know what that message meant. The one I got not the one you posted
I just got a laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium and I installed rct2 with no issues at all. Did you get a desktop or did you just upgrade?
Just my guess but might work:

1. Right-click Properties (on the .exe that is not working)

2. Compatibility tab

3. CHECK MARK under Privilage Level 'Run this program as admin.'

4. Also CHECK MARK under various other options, if you want.

5. *Bonus* Turn off UAC! If you don't know how, check the help file.

You guys are brave going with Vista so early. I will in about 9 - 12 months when Service Pack 2 is out and it's actually pretty stable.

It's plenty stable. It was stable a year ago. The issue is that it just doesn't add anything of real value.

I moved over to Vista a month ago and I like it alot, but Jeff is pretty much right. Even though it is stable there is no need to go out and upgrade your XP machine to Vista right away. Vista is essentially XP with some "pretty" effects. If you get a new computer with Vista then go on ahead because you don't have much of a choice.

I'm a nerd and work for a company where I'm the resident nerd. Because of that I try to run the latest and greatest of stuff all the while knowing the old school stuff.

What am I getting out of Vista? The virtual folders are a plus. I can place documents where ever I want and the Documents folder will find it, same goes with pictures, coaster por-- I mean movies, etc. Of course the Aero interface gives me the illusion that Windows is actually running fast. Home Premium (which is what I'm running at home) comes with some kick butt games like Chess and Mahjong. And so far I can run my old stuff like No Limits, RCT2, AoE2, and my console emulation stuff. I'm not much of a gamer, so I'm not sure what higher end games will work.

Hopefully john13601 was able to fix his problem.

"Kick butt?" You're such a dad. ;)

Not yet Rob. Good news is I was able to get my old computer running well enough to send the tracks files to the new one. Now I can see my rides on RCT3 which is mainly what I was after. Yes RCT3 sucks but I have always wanted to "ride" my rides. I'll miss my RCT2 parks on the new machine.

Strange thing, I took the RCT2 disk to Best Buy and loaded it on an identical machine and it took. The salesman said it may have something to do with my virus program.

Scott the only option I get when I get that message is to give up(click OK or X) and the whole thing shuts down.

It may also be a disk problem. The thing is 4 years old.

As for Vista, it's still about 99% over my head but considering I came off of WIN ME it should be.

Thanks for the help

I know you say its too early to get vista, but I've had no problems and its stable, other then windows live messenger crashing, figures. Rct2 runs like a dream, not sure i'd game on this, but it can support high end games...not that i would...but I'm not sure about the desktop pc's just yet.

Iff u'v got RCT3 wiy do u want 2 have RCT2 yu freak.

I am the king of men of rashta my home country, i live there on my own with shaklra the ice queen
Joey punk rock have you ever played rct3? If so you should know why I wanted my RCT2 back. RCT3 is only good for viewing your RCT 2 rides in 3D.

Problem was finally solved by swapping out computers at Best Buy. Exact same model and now it works.

^^RCT3 has major lag issues even on the fastest machine so for many of us it's back to RCT2....for me my problem with RCT3 lies in the fact that the game will no longer run on this machine thanks to some corrupt scenery files that I tried installing over a year ago.

Now I get the dreaded stack dump error message when trying to run the game for all of maybe 5 minutes & since it 's next to impossible to uninstall the expansions properly I just shelved it in favor of RCT2.

My kids like rct 3. To me its aggravating and hard to control. but it's good for seeing your RCT 2 files in 3D. For some reason none of my inverted coasters or 4D coasters would transfer over . The game say that parts won't connect . They worked when I loaded it on mom' s computer when game came out. Maybe it was something in those online updates that causes it.
RCT3 was not what we expected, good for designing rides and parks, but as soon as you get guests into your park, bam...major lag for any pc. RCT2 is just fine though. no problem.
