Rating

Some sites that have forums have the ability to rank the users.  I think this is a good idea, because if a user has a really low rating you would not waste your time reading there post and just skip it.

The problem with that is they also turn into popularity contests, which have nothing to do with the intended result.

unless you could somehow rate their posts on the value on what is being said.

That's still pretty subjective.  Still leaves it open to become a popularity contest.

There are a hundred and one stupid features in some of the forum packages out there that, as far as I'm concerned, serve no purpose. User rankings by number of posts, and especially those silly little graphics, annoy the crap out of me. Even worse are the people that allow embedding images when people put those damn vanity banners in their posts.

I think the Usenet die-hards are often anti-Web forum because the majority of those they've encountered are so crap-filled that it's hard to find the actual content.

Heck, I even think the interface to POP Forums is too busy, and I wrote it! That said, I still prefer to stick to more practical features like the favorite topics and such.

v6.0 will be a huge departure...
