Quote posting: READ THIS

Jeff's avatar

Apparently resetting the TOS button didn't get some people's attention. Please DO NOT use the quote feature unless you're going to scale down the quote, and preferably only if it's on a previous page. There's no reason to use the quote for any of the previous ten posts. We can all scroll just fine. If you do it anyway, we're just going to delete them... it's a waste of disk space.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Funny, people really like to use he quote option.  Thank you Jeff for minimizing the use of it a little bit!

Coaster131, Why is that such a hard request to ask. I see people using the quote feature for an entire person's response, which could be 150 lines long. Nobody is going to reread a whole long post if it has already been viewed, what's the point. The quote feature is there it respond to a sentence or two, not 25. Jeff is just asking that people scale down the use of the quote feature to save disk space. Quoting entire posts really does waste space after awhile. I don't think that is a difficult request and definately is not something hard for users to comprehend and actually do.

I don't know if others had this problem, but I had no idea why the TOS was reset until you pointed it out.

I have only one problem with this. Jeff: It's much too much work for you guys! :( You guys have done plenty to keep things running smoothly here, and it pains me to see more work added to your shoulders. May you all have very little to edit.
The only thing I have with posting quotes (and Jeff it is your site, run it how you please and I will certainly continue to abide by your rules) is when I want to respond to SPECIFIC points in a person's post that may have been missed. (See my posts in the Wicked Twister and Millennium Force rip off threads for examples) Having been on the internet and having been a newsgroup reader for a long time, it's almost automatic for me to quote points of a post if I'm replying to these certain points.

I do agree with you though, that not every single thing you reply to must be quoted, it's just the way I have done things since I started on the 'net.  I will try to do something about it on these forums if you disagree with it, as they are YOUR forums.

Is this an acceptable usage of the quote feature? I scaled it down to represent the specific fact that i want to point out.

Yes, provided the quotation isn't from the previous post.

"As far as I can tell it doesn't matter who you are. If you can believe, there's something worth fighting for..." - Garbage, "Parade"

Those of us who have participated in discussion groups for years know that some quoting is necessary, quoting the whole message is excessive and annoying, "me too" posting (quoting the whole original message and all the replies, and adding "me too" to the bottom) is in very bad taste, and putting the entire quoted message on the bottom instantly labels the user as a clueless Outlook user. :)

Be nice Dave... you weren't born an Internet user either. ;)

BOINK!

Time to bring this one back from the dead.

It's getting a little out of control again. I've deleted a dozen posts today that have been, as Dave described, annoying in their use of the quote feature.

For example, I just killed one that had an entire post quoted, and it was the last post! What, you don't think we can figure out that you're replying to the previous message?

Use common sense and don't be lazy. There are times where it isn't necessary to quote at all, when it's just as easy to say, "Member Soandso, I agree that pink bunnies are distracting, but on the other hand naked trailer trash take the cake for me."

Does anyone actually write anymore?

Just to annoy Jeff... ;)

Jeff asked...

Apparently not. Everybody just quotes everybody else and says, "Me too!". :)

pink BUNNIES are distracting?......they're nothing compared to the stupid little pink Christina Aguilera monsters that keep running around my office....

Seriously though, editing a post to get to the relevant portion you wish to address, it's so simple even an AOL user could do it....:)

Well, let's not go that far...

Sorry, I wasn't attempting to insult anyone in particular, but *working* with the web ALL day, every day, those AOL commercials just really entertain me......

THEIR supposition is that, sans *keywords*, the Internet becomes an unusable morass of websites.....I think they should apologize to their users for calling them stupid....but then again, paying THAT much for web access.....perhaps I should stop now.....;)
