Question for the computer savvy Buzzers

This really doesn't have to do with CoasterBuzz per say, but I have a problem every time I come to CoasterBuzz.

I somehow got the Bargain Buddy ad ware. I *thought* I deleted it and had it all taken care of when I used AdAware and X-Cleaner. Well apparently I didn’t do a good enough job. Now, every time I come to CoasterBuzz and I am not logged in as a paid member I get popups. I shouldn't be getting these because I have a popup blocker. (Before anyone jumps my ass I have the blocker for one reason. I only have it so I can see when I have spy/ad ware and only turn it on when I have a suspicion of it being on my computer) I normally check mark the box to stay logged in, but this new program I downloaded (X-Cleaner) deletes all my cookies when my computer starts so it unchecks that box for me.

I don't know why I'm getting these stupid popups now and only on CoasterBuzz. I have done everything all the websites I visited told me to do to get rid of this stupid ad ware I believe, but some of them are so technical that I really don’t know if I did everything correctly. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm willing to try anything!

I'm in the same boat as you are, with BargainBuddy and all, same pop-ups here...I do occasionally get pop-ups elsewhere, but I'm using both the Google toolbar blocker, as well as Spybot - Search and Destroy, and have Internet Explorer Immunity running, so it's not supposed to let any little programs through. Yet I still have this problem. What the heck?

Oh and I uninstalled Bargain Buddy and I thought I got rid of all the little programs too...perhaps I didn't...but anyway, what gives? *** Edited 5/12/2004 4:33:48 PM UTC by BigJim4Life***

Try HijackThis. Be careful how you use it, though, or you could delete the something you shouldn't.

Hmmm...well that time, I logged into CoasterBuzz, and nothing happened...no pop-ups or nothin. Hmmm...weird, eh?

BigJim I have the Google Toolbar also. I have Ad Aware 6.0 instead of Spybot. I don't have the IE Immunity thing, I have never heard of that.

Thanks for the reconmendation Gemini. I'm downloading it now it give it a try.

Be very careful with High Jack this. You can also get Reg Cleaner and clean out your start up folder. Some Spyware is know to run at start up and reinstall it self.

Thanks,
DMC

I downloaded it, but I didn't do anything. I am not computer savvy in the least and I didn't want to delete anything that I shouldn't.

Back to square 1. Thank you Gemini anyways. It was worth the try.

The IE Immunity is a part of the Spybot program...it helps to get rid of all those automatic installing programs...for some reason, it doesn't catch them all...but it gets most of them.

Make sure you re running the latest version of Ad-Aware. On the Ad-Aware 6 Status Screen under Initialization Status - make sure the reference file # is 01R303 08.05.2004. If not, click the check for updates button above the start button and you should be able to download the latest reference file. Then run Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware updates these files on a periodic basis, sometimes once a week, sometime less frequently.
If your using Windows XP you can use the System Restore feature to go back in time to a place where you didn't have that problem, or you could just reinstall Windows. You are using Windows right? I know nothing about MAC OS X or Linux.

Hope that helped!

Get a good firewall to stop new adware then run every adware remover you can find there are 4 or five good free ones. There are also free scanners you can use to scan system.Write down what they find and delete them. The problem is they write them to windows files so they are hard to delete.Reinstalling windows will not work as the files that control adware are not deleted by reinstalling. It will take a while. But you can get rid of most of them. Also when you download spybot you need to upgrade it right away it will double what it can find.

Sarah, try posting at the [url=http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/]Lavasoft forums. I know for a fact one of the admins there is a GTTP member, and a good source of help.
Well, I know that there is a new style spyware program that none of the spybot programs detect. I had one of these a couple weeks ago, and I ran Spybot S&D and ad-aware.

In order to get rid of it I needed to look at the list of running proceses and the do a google search on the ones I wasn't familiar with. Once I found it, I discovered that alot of people had encounted it, and there are programs to remove it. which I wish I would have saved, since it just came back, and I don't remember what it was.

BTW the program I encountered, would open a small window in the lower right hand corner right before the pop-up came. once I find the fix again I'll post it.

Yup, that's the one I have.

Danimal that is EXACTLY what I have. I hope you find it again!

Coasterguts, I just checked my Ad Aware updates and boy was I out of date! Thanks for the reminder. It still didn't get rid of my problemm, but it is good that I'm up to date now.

joe. I think I will try that. I have never had any problem with Ad Aware before. In fact I love it. Right now I'm willing to try anything though!

I really thank everyone for their help. *** Edited 5/13/2004 1:45:26 PM UTC by Sarah Jackson***

The problem with that pop up is that it changes its adress everytime you visit the site.
I tried to block it with spy-blaster, but this thing uses a different number and is back on the next day.
The bad thing is that it tries to install a spyware programm called "Avenue A." on your system.
This is really annoying. Do those people think anyone will eventually buy anything from them? Or is it just a disguise to install junk on your computer?
