Question about T-shirts, copyright...

Better yet, if you're going to call somebody out and rag on them for whatever reason (and not liking them isn't a good enough reason), do it by name. The stealth stabs are very, very lame and I could do without the nonsense drama here.

Jeff:

I'm so old that I actually remember when you had to put a copyright notice on something for it to be protected. I copyrighted my final exam in contract law to get a grin from my prof.

Yes, it is illegal to infringe on a copyright for personal use. However, as a practical matter it isn't economical to sue for one tee shirt. It would probably cost CP well into 5 figures to go to court to sue for the cost of one tee shirt that they might have sold. Also, it could create bad publicity for CP. That said, the proper thing to do is still to ask permission.

But... case law suggests that if you do not defend even minor infringement that it's more difficult to defend if you haven't actually registered it. So at the very least you should threaten people. ;)
