Possible Virus Alert...

I just recieved a computer virus which I luckly scanned and caught.  It was from someone with an email like riddler1@something..com and the subject was GoliathJr.  All it said was something like, "Hey I want your opinion on this" and had an attachment below.  Luckly I scanned it and Norton AntiVirus told me there was a unfixable virus inside.

Now it's strange and I'm posting this becuase it had to do with coasters, and I'm not sure how that came about.  Seeing that I post here at Coasterbuzz and stuff, I thought I might warn anyone else who could possibly get this.

Sounds like someone is infected with the SirCam virus. This virus/worm not only sends email to people in the victim's contact list, but ALSO to email addresses found in web pages in the user's cache! (I get several hits per week from this bugger, and it's annoying as hell...) So if your email appears on any web page somewhere, and someone infected with this virus reads that page, you may be the next recipient of a SirCam-generated worm message.

If you get infected, it's actually a pretty insideous little bugger to get rid of. (See http://vil.nai.com/vil/virusChar.asp?virus_k=99141 )

Moral -- don't open attachements from people you don't know. Use a virus scanner for attachments from people you DO know, just in case. Practice Safe Computing.

Not directly related to CoasterBuzz or coasters, but still a message that should get out, especially since CoasterBuzz members DO have their email addresses in their profiles -- a careless CB member could end up hitting our other users.

"Don't OPEN an e-mail from a person YOU DON'T KNOW!!!"

I'll been told that many times before.

Just keep that in mind & you'll be safe.

I just got three of the same emails with the subjects "Colossus," "Viper," and "rctpatch."  It seems this virus is pretty effective in that it uses subject lines that would typically interest me, except for the fact that it uses the same lame message.

I got it from 3 different people but they had their names show up. It was like Linda Simmons, and Ray Something, and it asked me for their opinion, and reply. I just sent them a nasty email back. Thank god it didnt get into my comp because I just bought a new one.

Cernelli , for those of us that don't know, what was the email address? And can you only get infected if you open the attachment?

Thanks!

Correct, you have to open the attachment. Just delete the message.

As for why it's stuff you might be interested in -- this virus harvests email addresses from web pages the infected person has visited. If the infected person likes roller coasters and hit roller coaster sites, they'll have OUR emails AND probably roller coaster-related items on their hard drive. SirCam attaches a randomly-selected file from the infected's hard drive, infects the file with itself, and then attaches the file to the email it sends (this actually makes the virus a possible security breach, depending on the nature of the infected's computer!)

It's a NASTY piece of work. The developer was fairly clever (NOT perfect, though -- I see several flaws that if I were to ever snap and decide to write a virus, I'd be careful to avoid :) ) in addition to malicious. Not a good combination, and exactly the kind of idiot who should be strung up by his ankles and flailed with CAT-5 cable until he relents.

I think I got one like that a while ago. I saw the email address, and became suspicious. Then I saw the actual messege, and I said. "Riiiiight...*tick**tick*...deleted!" :)

Awake Tour- June 15 - Darwin's Waiting Room, Puddle of Mudd, Deftones, Godsmack

Yeah, I use Mcafee, and it catches everything, tho I haven't gotten a coaster related one.
I was unfortunate enough to get my computer infected with the SirCam virus, probably from another member of my family opening up an attachment that contained it.

The worst part is that it sent itself to about 60 other email addresses, maybe even yours.

Symantec has a free program that removes the worm--worked like a charm.
