Haha no I'm not giving Patrick the finger
1. Deal with them, Jeff needs to find some way to pay for the bandwith
2. Pay the membership and support the price that way
Also I would like to go on record with being a person who falls category #1 (so its not just the members who disagree with you) allthough Im likely about to change, depending on weither or not I can make a CB event this year (now that I live in Ohio.)
2022 Trips: WDW, Sea World San Diego & Orlando, CP, KI, BGW, Bay Beach, Canobie Lake, Universal Orlando
I understand that the server is a windows based server and its a custom job all around but prehaps Jeff should find a better hosting provider. Most sites anymore do not use pop up ads any more. The argument that blocking popups is taking money away from sites has been proven invalid due to the fact that people do not want them and now every Major browser natively blocks pop-up ads.
I understand it takes a lot to run the site but maybe its time to find a better source of money. Google or Targeted ads such as ad brite.
Hi.....whats your name again?

I don't know if it's the pop-ups or not but everytime I come to this website in the last week my Firefox crashes. I keep getting script errors. Anyone else having this problem?
The only error I've ever seen is on the search.
I'm a member of the club so popups aren't an issue for me. I know they're annoying but I can understand why they're here.
R.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
The way I see it, I'm a club member because I like to go to certain events that are either club-only (BooBuzz), or need-to-be-in-a-club-and-CBC-is-cheaper-than-ACE (Winter Solace, HoliWood Nights)
For me the "loss" of popups is just a welcome bonus.
It's just like TV.. you either have commercials and watch network TV, or you pay extra for a service (DirecTV, TiVo, etc.) so you can either not worry about commercials or are able to cut them out.
Lastly.. "The argument that blocking popups is taking money away from sites has been proven invalid due to the fact that people do not want them and now every Major browser natively blocks pop-up ads." Umm.. how is that proven invalid? That actually substantiates the argument that blocking popups is taking money away from the site. It just explains why it's so prevalent. It also explains why there has to be literally 10 popups.. because every Major browser natively blocks pop-up ads, you gotta shoot a lot at it for 1 or 2 to get through and generate revenue. And yes, even almighty FireFox doesn't block everything from the barrage from coming to CB before I sign in with my popup-free experience. Nor does a pretty hefty ad-blocking server package ON TOP of IE's internal blockers when I'm checking on break at work... on a corporate block-a-ton-o-crap network.
Oh, and when did Major browser get a promotion that he has to be capitalized? I thought he was still just Ensign browser, and acted like a major? ;) j/k on that one.. don't take it personally.
However, Jeff hosts this site (I think) at his own home location using his own server computer off of a T1 or a T3 connection, which is in & of itself very expensive ($1000+/mo), so it's not as if he's using some lame hosting company and relying on them to be up & running 24/7. From what I remember, it's all out of his residence using I thought either a UNIX or Win 2003 server (ida know).
Everyone always says, "Well just get better ads." And where do you suggest I do that? Google ads don't pay for this site's keywords.
That said, I recently started working with the company that sells ads for Digg, Boing Boing, Revision3, TechCrunch and other trendy sites. It'll take them a few months to ramp up sales for CB, but it will be more relevant when it starts to flow. If it really works out with them, then I can make the pops go away. I'd love nothing more.
My current expenses for this site by itself are inconsequential. The money I've spent (on credit) for software and hardware over the years is not. I also like to think that my time is worth something as well. Since the day I first put ads on Guide To The Point, people have been giving me crap because I want to make money with my sites, as if that's some kind of sin. I'm not going to apologize for wanting to make money. I want to offer a good product, but I want something for it too.

How come you can now get 2000mb of space and 2TB of bandwith for 9 dollars a month.
It's called overselling and it sucks. The old adage of "You get what you pay for" has never been more true than it is when it comes to webhosting. Go find the names of some of the 'companies' that make these kind of offers and then go here and see what real world webmasters have to say about those services.
It looks cute on paper, but it just doesn't happen that way.
Now I use another one that's fairly inexpensive, but reliable as all get out, though if I experienced the kind of traffic that CBuzz does, I could see it becoming an issue.
I'm not a big fan of pop ups when they're overpowering, but I totally understand the necessity behind them, that's for sure.

I didn't know that you could forget worrying about commericals with DirecTV. Matter of fact, unless you have the Tivo or DVR, that's the only way I know to not worry about commerials. I've had DirectTV and you cannot block out commercials that I was aware of.
ads use cookies to cap popup frequencies and if you dont have cookies enabled for coasterbuzz.com you will get a popup every page.
sorry bout the caps i just wanted it to stand out from the rest of the bickering, lol.
