Plane to fly low Cedar Point for terminally ill children

Posted | Contributed by Captain Matt

The Make-a-Wish Foundation has secured a flight from United Airlines to take children with "life-shortening" illness over Cedar Point tonight, fully illuminated.

The story appears in The Sandusky Register.

It's a really great gesture on CP's part, but if you have ever been to the Point in Jan. or Feb. you'd know that very little of the "flash" is left on the rides. It's usually stripped off in the fall, reworked and put back on the rides(along with the trains, tubs, etc)in the spring. They maybe able to light off the floods and chase lights on the coasters, but I imagine that would be about it.
I would imagine that just seeing Millie all lit up would really make these kids day. They don't care that there are no trains on the tracks, they will just be happy with what they get. Some enthusiasts could learn a lesson from this story.

I was there tonight when the plane went over, standing in the marina parking lot. Kind of a neat sight knowing who was on the plane. It was really odd because the normal "street" lights along the midway were not on, ditto for the main parking lot. Raptor was dark as well, but if they're painting it, I'm not surprised. Mean Streak, The Force, Blue Streak, Mantis and Giant Wheel all looked great. Very surreal, because there wasn't any noise coming from anywhere.

Yes this is good and well, but wait until you hear on the news tomorrow how a disgruntled SFWoA employee hijacks the plane and forces it to crash directly into Millennium Force's lift hill.

Wow, I don't know what went over me.

Seriously though, this is why Cedar Point is number 1. This is unprecidented in the amusement industry. No other park would dare be this considerate to the less fortunate.

Yea, right CPgenius, I think EVERY other park would just say no. CP may just be the only business in the world that would do anything for sick children. Hell I bet all the other parks would even put up signs that say "we hate sick children."

Like I said, its a great act of kindness and compassion, but CP isn't the only business that tries to help the less fortunate. How many know a local park that will give you free or discounted admission with an unopened toy around the holidays? Quite a few I'm sure. I'd hardly call this event unprecedented. *** This post was edited by The Anti-Rumor on 2/11/2001. ***
Most parks do things like this every year, I can remember the big food drive SFMM did last year. Of course you look better if it makes the press, but most parks don't need that kind of credit. Still, anytime you do anything for a misfortunate kid(or anyone for that matter), it's a great thing. We don't have enough of that anymore, most people are happy enough just hording their own.

Thank you Disney, thank you... *** This post was edited by Middleman on 2/11/2001. ***
Jeff, they had the "Giant German Lemon" lit? We always used to strip off all the light assemblys and the tubs off for the winter. Either they're leaving them on now, or they did go out of their way to put them back on for this. It was a pain in the butt to get GGL's lights to work in the Spring. My hats off to the people in Maint. who pulled this off.
I won't mention any names, but the company I fly a Boeing 727 for can only taxi around on its "Fantisy Flights." Hats off to both CP and UAL for this neat feature.

I once did a low circle over PKD at 6,000 feet while holding on a flight going into Washington, DC area. Since we were just doing turns killing time, I asked ATC if they would let me orbit over one area. After just one circle, a flight attendant called and asked what was going on. So much for my sightseeing trip! (I only wished I had a camera with me)

The Make-A-Wish foundation is very nice. My uncle died in may 1999 and he had a lot of donations from his funeral. He had many friends over 1,000 people were there and over 500 cars were in the line going to the cemetary. Well anyway my mom donated the donations from the funeral to the Make-A-Wish foundation because my uncle liked to donate to them and we got a letter from them that they were able to send a girl with cancer to colorado to ride horses and I think that is very nice for them to be able to do that kind of things for sick people that might die soon.
CP cares about more than just money, they actually care about the guests and kids.
Gimme a break, really how much money and man power do you think it costed them to do that.
Still, I sure would not want to pay their electric bill.
