[Here's the official press release:]
Paramount's Kings Island today unveiled plans to build the first interactive family ride in the park's history, "Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle." The new adventure ride is based on the timeless antics of the classic Hanna-Barbera™ character Scooby-Doo, who recently made his live action debut in the Warner Brothers release Scooby-Doo. Park guests join Scooby-Doo and the entire Mystery, Inc. gang of Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy on the case to explain the mysterious activity of a green ghost haunting an ancient castle.
The animated adventure begins as guests board their very own Mystery Machine that travels through ghostly graveyards, creepy corridors, and down into dingy dungeons. While winding through the castle, riders are equipped with Fright Light ghost blasters to zap ghosts and collect points. Points are tallied at the end of the experience to see who has the best ghost-zapping ability.
"Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle" will change the look of the award-winning Hanna-Barbera Land forever. Guests will enter the attraction through the front gates of a huge castle," said Craig Ross, executive vice president and general manger. "Riders zapping targets trigger a variety of ghostly gags which makes each ride a different experience. This is an attraction kids, parents, and grandparents will enjoy riding over and over again."
"Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle" premieres in 2003 and replaces the Phantom Theater attraction that closed in mid July to make way for the new attraction construction
Scooby-Doo first aired on the CBS television network Saturday morning, September 13, 1969 and has earned the distinction of being the longest-running cartoon on television. The mystery-solving Great Dane has starred in more than 310 animated episodes and now stars in his first live action movie.
"Scooby-Doo and the Haunted Castle" will be the newest attraction in the Golden Ticket award-winning Hanna-Barbera land at Paramount's Kings Island. The Golden Ticket award results are determined by a pre-selected group of experienced theme park enthusiasts considered well-traveled park guests. The 400 judges ride, eat, observe and enjoy the best of the best that theme parks have to offer. The best kid's area in the world encompasses the Nickelodeon™ Central area as well as the classic antics of Hanna-Barbera™ Land. Judges noted that between these two areas, Paramount's Kings Island has the greatest variety of childrens' attractions including: four kids coasters, more than any park in the world crowning Paramount's Kings Island the kids coaster capitol of the world; a collection of more than 20 rides; and two stage shows with daily performances.

CPLady - well, it's still *another* Scooby Doo dark ride. It may be a bit bigger, sure, but that's not much consolation for me.
While I've never seen Tomb Raider in person, I'm not impressed by what I have seen or heard. I take themed entertainment very seriously, somewhat paradoxically. Just because it's good by PKI's standards doesn't it make it good, in my book.
This sounds like it's coming from Sally, like the others. I *loved* Ghost Hunt at Lake Compounce, so I have no doubt the ride will be great fun. I just wish there were less synergy between *everything*.

(Former Signature replaced due to bad joke with accident) The Beast at night-Two peas in a pod?
Will it replace the phantom ttheater building, or will it be demolished and built again? Also, I heard that the ride replacing KC will be suspended, thats all I've heard. And there is much more space between SOB, that dumb race car thing, and the all to old Adventure Express itskevin. so space isnt much of an issue. And Chernabog, Ride before you rate please; Tomb Raider is the parks best idea since Action Zone. Not only is the ride amazing, but PKI is trying hard to give the park a better quality image by desining theamed rides.

Regarding Scooby Doo, a little bit of history:
Many years ago, Hanna-Barbera was a division of Taft Broadcasting, the same company which bought Coney Island, closed it, and built Kings Island. That was the origin of the Hanna-Barbera license at Kings Island. Scooby Doo happens to be a Hanna-Barbera character.
Kings Island has been sold twice since then, but until the sale to Paramount the sales have all been more than a little incestuous, keeping Kings Island within the Taft/Citicasters/North American Financial Group family of companies. Then, there were two major asset sales. Within a relatively short period of time, North American sold Kings Island to Paramount, and North American sold Hanna-Barbera to Turner Entertainment. I have no idea what kind of licensing agreement was established at that time for Kings Island, but it seems obvious that Kings Island retained some kind of a long-term license for the Hanna-Barbera characters.
Using the Hanna-Barbera cartoon library, Turner Entertainment launched the Cartoon Network. Then, in what was then the biggest media merger of all time, Turner Entertainment and Time-Warner merged. At that time, Six Flags was owned by Time-Warner. So you can see how some kind of Hanna-Barbera license could appear at Six Flags.
But of course Six Flags is no longer part of AOL/Time-Warner. I suppose the big question now is which license will run out first: the Six Flags/Warner Brothers license? Or the Kings Island/Hanna-Barbera license?

Dave comes through (again)!
Thanks for straightening that one out. It's like trying to figure out a family tree.
I hope the ride is as good as Universal's MIB. That was a very enjoyable ride for my family. It will be interesting to see how this ends up. This makes ride #4 in that building (and I'm old enough to have ridden the other 3 :))

"Back seat, no hands."
To the best of my knowlege, PKI has extentended their Hanna Barberra agreement twice since Paramount took over. The first went from 92-99 and the new agreement was till 2005.
This agreement started in 1968 with something as simple as charicters roaming Cincinnati's Coney Island.
