PKI changes locomotive names as tribute

I found out yesterday that Paramount's Kings Island is in the midst of changing the name of their 36" gage train locomotives as a tribute to their first engineers.

Both the Green locomotive (currently the Simon Kenton) and the Blue locomotive (currently Tecumseh) will both be re-named after the two engineers that ran the trains in it's first years at the park.

I am still working on the names of the two gentleman, but thought it fantastic when I heard the news!

One side of Tecumseh's cab was complete as of last Thursday. (The name escapes me at present.) It should be finshed by now. Simon Kenton will be changed within the next week or so.

William, I'm sure you could tell us the make, model, year, and features of both those steamers. :)

William I could too LOL

You have the greatest signature ever you know. ;)

Who was it that said we aren't even wet yet? I am thinking it was Dave.

Brent, I believe our Georgian friend Chris said that after we splashed the bridge on Amazon (OOPS),I should say Congo Falls. I believe someone else was stating something about the air we felt on that drop also. Hmmm, I wonder who that was. ;)

I was just gona ask about the Motive Power lumpy.

They just are not as good as those antiques out of Phillidelphia, that they have at CP

LOL

That was me commenting on the air.

And no those PKI engines just aren't the real coal burning Baldwin things we have at CP. And I was gonna say that webpage on Trainweb is how I know the specs too LOL.

I was never a fan of Crown's locomotives, but in the last few years I have been able look at PKI's two a little more closely. Ken William's built a very well constructed and rugged machine. They do what they were designed to do and do it well. Besides your normal wear, PKI's locomotives have served them well for 30 years now without any major mechanical issues. I admit tearing 1 engine apart every two winters for rehab does help in keeping them in tip top shape. I commend the steam maintenance department at KI for doing such a wonderful job.

CP has a nice fleet of locomotives as well. I like how they operate their railroad in a mid 1800's style without the use of air brakes or knuckle couplers. That is an era of railroading you really don't see demonstrated in today's time.

If you want to experience real steam narrow gauge railroading at an amusement park. Go to Dollywood and ride the railroad. With its 4% grade you get to see and feel those ex-Alaska Baldwin engines do what they were designed to do. Climb a mountain that is. If you get the chance to ride in the cab, Do It, what a rush. So if you get down in East Tennesee tell them Lumpy sent you.

Lumpy, its good to hear from another true steam fan. While it was sad to visit PGA last week and walk the railbed of their former train, I was overjoyed to visit Knotts and witness real, authentic narrow gauge equipment. PGA at least redeemed themselves by keeping in-park transportation (the skyride). I agree on DollyWood's as well. Very well maintained, and you can't beat the train robbery!

How nice of PKI to honor those that first ran the train. Its the only remaining Paramount park railroad. :(

Thank's Arrow Guy for brining up Knott's. I had forgotten all about that Colorado equipment rambling along in California.

I love the little Plymouth Switcher at CP too. The one dressed up to look like a steamer.

The link and pin couplers have always enthralled me at CP as does coal hand firing. There is nothign quite like the smell of creasote, coal smoke, grease, and steam all mixed together.

I think I am gonna go train watching now. ;)

As for the Knott's equipment I have a huge article about it somewhere. It was either in Trains Magazine or Railfan. I am gonna have to go try to find it now.

It's all ex D&RGW if I am not mistaken?

I must be really crazy then. I am a Coaster Enthusiast, Railfan and work for a major railroad while volunteering at a railroad museum. Where do I find the time to go to PKI and other parks? Carefull planning.

All my hobbies deal with tracks.

Trains, coasters, and racing.

Is that weird or what?

Lumpy, who do ya work for (full and part time?). Just curious.

Its one thing to appreciate these older forms of transportation, but operating them really makes you look at them in a different light. There's nothing like being the sole engineer of a 1/3 scale American 4-4-0......yikes! Water level is getting low, I've got 132 people in tow, a 3% grade, and I'm running out of wood (the particular line I worked on was privately owned in Northern Indiana and used wood scraps from local factories.....when they got low, I had to burn anything in sight!).

What gets me is some of the smaller gauge live steam operate at a higher boiler pressure than the larger. Knotts' equipment is painstakingly restored, and they alternate locos every other year, similar to what KI does. Another nice touch is that KI lets families up in the cab. It's a challenge to teach youngsters about these incredible, but complex, machines. I get a kick out of the boiler blowdown valve (used to rid the water of mineral buildup and junk). Disney always seems to open theirs while I'm in line for a ride......Thursday it happened while in line for Haunted Mansion at Dland. Everyone jumped, and thought the train blew to smitherines!

Lumpy is an engineer for CSX.

I love being around people when the top off or blow down valve goes off on a locomotive. People just flip out at first.

Where did you run live steam in Northern Indiana Brad?
