I was looking forward to this weekend for some time. All of the hype around Son of Beast was sucking me in, and I was so ready to ride. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of time muttering "SOB" with its original meaning.
I guess I had high expectations after having such a good time at Kennywood two weeks ago. The day got ugly early on when passing through Columbus at 9 a.m., where they closed two lanes of I-71 for no identifiable reason. Once I arrived after the three hour drive from Cleveland (Brunswick, actually), I was a little surprised at the $7 parking fee. Ouch.
Next stop, the season pass center, where I picked up passes for my fiancee and I. We planned to visit once in the fall after Cedar Point closed, and plan to also visit PKD, so the $80 price tag is a bargain. I've only got CP and SFO to compare to, but what an incredible system they have of banging out season passes. It's incredibly fast! Fill out the form, give it to the cashier, pay, then get in a long line to get your photo. That long line moved quickly because they have an army of 16 people taking photos. By the time you get out your pass is ready at the door. I was seriously impressed!
Off to the Beast... still good fun after all these years! The helix felt faster and smoother than usual. The line moved fairly quickly, with the exception of a brief stop so the vomit control technicians could handle a little accident.
I never had to wait long enough to see what was going on in the Outer Limits queue, but I have to admit that the attempt at theme isn't that bad. The story behind the ride is a little cheesey, but I like how they work the guests in. I still contend that the ride is smooth and a lot of fun, you just need to know how to ride it. If those stupid restraints didn't swallow your head, it would not cause any head trauma. The quick transitions in the first three inversions whip you around, but tilting your head out of the harness helps.

I try very hard to excuse the closure of Sonny, because it is a new ride and has only been running for about a week. I try really, really hard. However, with all of the hype and noise surrounding this ride, both in enthusiast circles and the media, my expectations to ride were very high, and I was terribly disappointed.
To make matters worse, the indifference to capacity and periodic closures of other rides seemed unacceptable on this, the third weekend they were open. Rides have problems, I understand that. But if I were a once-a-year visitor, I would have left feeling ripped off.
One positive note, Stephanie did like the things we were able to ride. She's not quite an enthusiast (we're not married yet! ;)), but she does know a fair amount about the rides. She liked the Beast because of its history and attention to preservation (she's got an MS in Biology). Surprisingly, she like Outer Limits better than Beast. It's always refreshing to get opinions from the "GP."
I hope they get their act together before my next visit! Next stop: SFO Friday and CP Saturday!

Sounds unfortunate. I'm sorry to say that in my experience, your describing standard operating proceedure at PKI.
I have always liked Top Gun too. Isn't it amazing that they can consistantly stack trains on a ride that only has two?
I was there as well. My good friend works on King Cobra, so I went directly there when I got there. I arrived around 1:00, and SOB was running. Our plan was to meet at Cobra when he got off at 4:00, then proceed to SOB. Nobody seemed to know what the problem was, but we stayed until 10:00, and nobody was working on the ride all day. I will say, however, that the mere sight of that thing is amazing. Hopefully I'll be able to go next weekend, and hopefully it will be open.
On a side note, Jeff, you didn't stay for the Sugar Ray concert???? I mean, he played for a whole hour!!! LOL! That concert would make the day even more of a rip-off.

I also was there yesterday, I felt that the park was PACKED.. I don't know if it was the Sugar Ray concert or the SOB or both but there was a very large amout of people there.
It was my first time at the park sence 6th grade (I'm now in 11th) and I was surprised how big it really was. I remember it being much smaller. When I went there in 6th grade I was way too much of a wuss to ride coasters. Now I am a full fledged (sp?) coaster fanatic!
I really enjoyed the Face Off over everything. I waited 2 Hrs for the very Back car that faces frontwards. I rode it last, and it was at night, going through that station at that speed is just amazing (can't wait for S:UE) and looking backward wile going through the cobra roll and loop blew my mind! That is one of my favroite rides now, only behind Raptor, Gemini, and Shivering Timbers. I was also very impressed by top gun, if only it was a little longer. Outer Limits was just too sweet how you took off!! And the first part of the ride, I swear I did not know what direction I was going in!! The Vortex was cool, its like a huge cork screw with out the shakes. And that Boomerang you do at the end was cool going into it. The Beast was cool, but not as cool as everyone thinks in my opinon, it is old, but that does not mean its great, it is a classic ride, I am true to that, but great?
I was so mad because me and all my friends were just going to ride the SoB at night... then when we found out it closed we were so mad. All the way from detroit Michgan, and I didn't get to ride it. I know ill be coming back in the summer, but what if they break it? I heard it is very fast and very rough for a wooden ride.
Anyone know any offical word on why the SoB was closed?? I talked to a lot of pleople, the guy who was running the top gun said that they were testing a new car, A guy that rode it the day before that I talked to said that the lap bars were coming up on there own. Just got back from the 235 mile round trip to PKI. Made the DIRE mistake of wanting to ride SOB so bad couldnt wait-with great anticipation and excitement the kids and I drove there this morning-got their early enough to be parked in row 1-get to the ticket booths-
what do you know-a sign that says "Son of Beast will not be open today-sorry for any inconvenience" INCONVENIENCE? Like it was no big deal? What the heck is the deal with this park and this coaster? I was FURIOUS!
Ranted and raved all day that I will bet MF will be up and running when CP opens-yes I was HOT.
Finally got to ride Face Off-it was ok-no Raptor-
Drop Zones line too long to bother-Top Gun was fun-Vortex as always was awesome-my personal fav-
Beast lines too long-forget that-OLFOF-broke down while we were in line-we waited anyway-finally up and running-total wait time like 1.75 for that one-longest wait of the day. As always (as Jeff had mentioned in his tread) trains were stacked-
the ride ops really just dont get into their job that much-
I NEVER should have gone without finding out for sure if SOB was working-I should have known better-the 1st year OLFOF was up it was down more than it was up-apparently will be running into the same ordeal with SOB. As always though the park was clean-we had fun-and it get me all the more ready for some SERIOUS riding at CP next week-and found out happily my truck isnt as big a cow on long hauls as I had feared.

Welcome back Raptor riders-how was your flight?
I have to agree that PKI deserves low marks for everything that has already been mentioned. As for S.O.B., it only ran for approximately 20 minutes. It ran from approximately 1:35 p.m. until approximately 1:55 p.m. Saturday. Fortunately, G&K both were on it during the 20 minutes that it ran so we will be giving our full report on the coaster in the G&K discussion list.
As for the Sugar Ray concert... Well, we have some ranting to do about that. The concert ticket price was advertised as $14.99 for season pass holders. When we attempted to purchase two tickets, the cashier attempted to charge us $19.99. The day was already not going well and I simply was not going to accept that! K wanted to see Sugar Ray and I thought it would be fun but not if it meant paying five bucks more than advertised.
To make a REALLY LONG story short, we got the highest levels of management involved. They conceded and agreed to give EVERYONE who purchased tickets after G&K $5 in Scooby Bucks along with the tickets. They said that was the best they could do because they had programmed the computers to only sell the tickets for $19.99.
The concert started with band that did not impress me much but they were OK, I guess, if you go in for that sort of thing (kinda punkish). There was a very long interval between the opening band and Sugar Ray. It seemed that nearly everyone was getting restless. Finally, after a forty-minute interval, Sugar Ray came on and played for almost exactly one hour. The show, although short, far exceeded my expectations. The band has a lot of energy and a good sense of humor. I was only vaguely familiar with them so I was surprised at how many of their songs I had heard before. They played some genuine rock and roll in addition to the half dozen or so top forty tunes.
Jeff has already mentioned the steep $7 parking charge but that is not the worst of it. Ya know after I was at PKI last year, I sent them an email expressing my disappointment in the ride ops. I recieved a very nice personal letter from someone within, I imagine, the PR department. They claimed that others in the management staff agreed with me that the ops were less than enthusiastic. He said there have been discussions as to what can be done to improve them, but apparently nothing was changed. :-( Oh well, times have changed, society is different, and Paramount is a big company that only really cares about the almighty dollar. Of course, I am slightly biased since I worked for Blockbuster a few years ago, and I know first hand on important the money is to Viacom (Paramount's parent company).
JJ
Thats why I enjoy Cedar Point, the ride ops at Kings Island are much better looking, the girls on the face off were gourgeous (sp?) and there was also a cutie running the racer, but they did all seem very down about somthing. At Cedar Point, the Mantis ops are nice then all the Kings Island ops put together. If anyone has been on Mantis they know what im talking about.
I don't know if I should be insulted or not by that comment Relic...why would you have to compare the looks of ride ops anyway? That's dumb, ain't like you're gonna get their digits or something.
A very perturbed Cedar Point employee who doesn't think she looks *too* bad.....

Well, it looks like we'll be going to PKI this Saturday. I don't really want to. Imagine that! Seriously, we went early last year and it was nothing but problem after problem. I was stuck on Top Gun for 25 minutes, Vortex for about 5, switched to flat rides and experienced not much better. They weren't down, but there was stuttered stops and starts on several and on the Monster I'm pretty sure the guy running it had to look in a handbook to figure out what he was supposed to do. He was sure flipping through it like mad and then called someone over to give him a hand figuring something out. We even had to wait an hour for food once. I'd really just as soon wait until the ops know what they're doing and all the bugs are worked out before I go. Sadly, we're closest to King's Island, so it's the easiest to get to...and my husband doesn't believe in waiting a few days til some other places we want to go open up and he has more time off :) I suppose part of it is just that I don't find PKI all that exciting anyway. There are so many other, better parks with better coasters. I end up rather bored there after a while.
Jill
The more and more I read...not JUST on this forum, but on many others, that I will just stick to my original game plan. CP, Hershey, Kennywood and Mich Adventure this summer. I will not alter the plan. AS USUAL, PKI cannot fit the billing. I just don't want to go back. I have never experienced a 'good' day at PKI, always over waiting on slow days, poor ride management...then...they build something that they could not handle, hyping it to the max, then AGAIN...disappointing the crowd. Paramount = Money Hungry Bastards. I won't waste my money or time going 200 miles to get there. It sucked before...and things haven't changed. I have had better days at Santa Claus Park in Indiana, then I had at PKI. (Size of the park, in this case, not quality, Santa Claus is great!!!)
Natalie: Go get em'...what ride do you work on?? We'll say Hi, when we come on Memorial Day...6 couples on a mission from God.
Until then, I have one piece of advice: If you value your dollar as much as most people. Research where you are going over the summer on the web. We are going to Hershey, K-Wood and MI Adventure over the summer. I researched all 3 hard, on every web site and talked to many people about them. I will not waste my bucks, I know satisfaction will be guaranteed. PKI has yet to reach the $30 of their admission, when it comes to entertainment value. Sorry, If I offended anyone whose home park is PKI, I know how people rant on about negatives at CP and I get upset... but I have had TWO positive experiences at PKI in 8 tries...I guess it's time to stop trying. I have had only one bad experience at CP in 46 tries. Cedar Fair: eat well off my cash, 'cause you'll be getting more of it.

I tend to think that Kennywood is one of the best values anywhere, so I think you'll have fun!
I want to like PKI, I really do. They have some of my favorite rides, and rides I'd like to make my favorite, namely SOB. Here's hoping they get it together before I go there next time.

Jeff, when you get a chance...I know you are busy...email me some personal info, like experiences or things to stay away from at Kennywood. I heard all great things about that park and I've wanted to go since I was 10, but never had the chance. We are going in the middle of July and want to have a great weekend. Hershey on Friday and K-Wood on Sunday. Thanks. I really hope that PKI get's it together, too. I'll have a few thinking about it though....

Woody I'll be a sweeperette this year but my start date isn't until June 11. :o/ So I won't be there on Memorial Day. I'll still be here at school.

Sorry Nattie Bee, of course I really didn't care I was just making a comment... actually its pretty even now thinking about it, I just notice good looking girls, remmeber im 16 =)... but you guys are so much nicer, I was just comaring the difference between the CP and PKI ride ops. Sorry if I offened you, guess it really was not the right think to say =(
Kiss, Kiss, hug, hug. I'm glad you two made up, but Relic talk about pulling the preverbial foot out of one's mouth. Size 14, please.
NattieBee, Hopefully, I'll see you in July, then!
Being a sweeperette, you must feel that gender equity is a problem in the RCT game, they only have male workers. (Plus, uni-sexed guests) =0).

lol Woody I have no problem with the fact that all the people assigned to walk around my park and sweep up puke are guys. In fact, I think it's funny. I even give them yellow uniforms. :o)
This has gone really off topic now tho, sorry Jeff. I would comment on the topic but I haven't been to PKI yet this year. I may be going to SFNE tomorrow tho, if I do there will definitely be a TR involved.

...she has a nice personality, but....
What's with the personality thing?? Please hit us with a TR this weekend.
Back to the action: Does anyone know if the cranes from last weekend's debacle have left the SOB sight? Is there a sign of life this week from Sonny or do we need to revive with the paddles... CLEAR!

We were there Saturday and drove by Sunday. SOB still had the crane hanging over it and there were signs as you drove in Saturday saying that it wouldn't be open. When we got in the park, Top Gun and the Beastie (and I think King Cobra) weren't running, but they did open later on. We didn't check out everything else right then, but AE and the Racers were running and we rode those really quick before we met back up with the kids. We may not even bother to go back this year, even though we're only about an hour and a half away. Heck, they may not even open SOB this year...hehe.

Hey Woody,
When u go to Hershey ride wildcat, wild mouse, and lightning first. Then, work your way to Great Bear. It worked well last year. When I say it worked well I mean walk ons for everything. Ive done it twice and the plan works beautifully. I rode all of the coasters 3 times by 5o'clock. Try it, it works.
