Pennsylvanians break 24-hour coaster record

Posted | Contributed by ToddConstantine

Inspired by last year's record of riding 40 coasters in 24 hours, a team of four PA men destroyed that record by riding 75 coasters in the same amount of time. The riders used helicopters and other vehicles to get around, all in the name of raising money for the Children's Miracle Network.

Can someone please explain to me how they cheated? No rules were broken, no one was tricked or decieved! Are you guys just jealous? You seem to be making up your own set of rules.
Right on Old Crow. Some of these kids that run their mouths have no friggin clue what they are talking about. If they had the opportunity to break the record like GRP did, without having to wait in line and have it on television, you bet your butt they'd be the first in line. Hell, I would've, and it wouldn't have had anything to do with my ego. I also know David and the GRP people personally, and let me tell you that the whole entire thing was about having fun and owning the record. It wasn't about their ego's, or anything else other than to own that record for awhile. These other people that broke the record deserve their kudos for doing it, and especially for a great cause, but GRP did it only because they love coasters and wanted to do something special. Who wouldn't? Doesn't matter if you do it for charity or not, it's special either way. Plain and simple. Records are made to be broken, and the GRP people have no qualms about that. I really think you kids that post here should think about what you say before you make yourself look stupid. You have no idea how hard that record was for the GRP team. I'm sure it was hard for the new team too. David worked his butt off getting that all together, they had to endure the hostile crowds and the lack of sleep to break the record. You try going through what they went through and see how you feel afterwards, maybe you won't be so quick to pop your mouths off. Give them a break, and shut up already. This is ridiculous. It really is. :(
Geez! Who cares! The only records I care about are the physical ones. Tallest, fastest and longest coaster. I could care less who holds the record for most coasters in a 24 hour period.

Its nice to see that this group at least did it to benefit someone besides themselves though.
why is there so much hostile over this? Everybody is being so rediculous. There is no cheating and both groups are honorable. GRP was not an bunch of ego-inflated coaster freaks, they actually did a favor to enthusiasts by giving more publicity to certain amusement parks and ACE. I am also tried of hearing all these rambling about teeenage kids popping off at there mouth. I'm 16 and acting responsible and more mature than most older people on this site. Stop being stereotypical and stop trash the younger coasterbuzzers cuz everyone sometimes says things that are inexcuseable.

I am truely shocked to hear the cr*p you folks are spewing. I know about 80% of the people from GRP and got to ride Goliath with them at the end. GRP did not break the record becasue of there EGO!

Well since I'm the only one in this thread who mentioned ego, I'll assume you're talking to me.

The ego is the self. They did it for themselves, without a doubt. I never said there was anything wrong in doing something for yourself, in fact I highly recommend it. :)

But I can understand how that may have been interpreted badly as ego is thrown around as a negative word most of the time and even in that context I stand by the statement. It's an ego thing to have the record. The article Jeff linked to even mentions that Mr. Escalante was there and mentioned he wants to get the record back. A quote from the article:

"'David wants us to team up and go for 100,' said Guarno"

I'm sure David was encouraging the new record holders; it does a lot for the coaster community to get this kind of recognition, I guess. But the second his record fell he was there pulling the strings to get his name back on it. That's an ego thing if you ask me.

Sure, if given the opportunity I'd be on it in a second and it'd be a ego thing for me too. When did that become a bad thing?
I think this could be broken by starting in SoCal with Knott's, Disney, and SFMM. Then use a super sonic jet to fly to Ohio and got to PKI, CP, SFWoaA, and then to some of the parks they used.

But you would need a super sonic jet first...:)

Your best? Losers are always whining about doing their best...winners go home and ******* the prom queen.
Don't any of you guys get it?? They are doing it for the kids, and NOT the record. So what they got help by a chopper. They just got the record to make money for the kids and not to brag to the world.

These folks are awesome. They smashed the record and raised the bar for future record attempts. All records are made to be broken. The guys that set the first record had to know this would happen. I have a feeling that the 75 coaster record won't be standing for too long either. But for now, CONGRATS. Anyone out there that wants to make a future attempt better start lining up the corporate sponsors. I have a feeling there are a group of people that have already started planning the next coaster record attempt. Car, Plane, Jet, or Rocket Ship, who cares, GO FOR IT !
Good Heavens... what's all the venom about? Cheating? Egos? Who cares? Sounds like the green-eyed monster to me.
I'm with Jim Fisher: both groups did neat things, and let's admit that we'd have loved to be a part of either one. They both sounded like a blast to attempt.
And we're mostly all credit-whores anyway!
Please relax and enjoy the action!

Ride 'em all... and then again!
Coasterkid15.......I have been reading your posts and I just have to comment. Children's Miracle Network is indeed a charity and YES I did donate to this record breaking fundraiser. I was not asked to donate so a record could be broken. I was asked to donate to help children who are suffering with terminal illnesses. Now, if you don't like the East Coasters for Kids, then plan your own record breaking trip. But, do it for something worthwhile like the East Coasters for Kids did. And, before you go bashing men who went all out and accomplished something great, why don't you look at yourself and try to figure out a way to spend your time other than putting down other people. Why don't you consider helping out children with terminal illnesses? It may open your eyes and do you some good.
And.....EAST COASTERS FOR KIDS.....CONGRATULATIONS! YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF YOURSELVES.
Hi,
It is Phil Guarno, First, thank you to all those who had the great postings and realize that this was for "the kids". Nothing gained by any of the individuals and about 50 k raised for sick children. As far as David goes, he has become a good friend of mine and he has supported our efforts all along. He is a true sportsman, fair friendly and just into promoting the awareness of ACE and roller coasters.

Now as far as the trip. Yes it was made different by using helicopters the whole way, donated by Flapdoodles and RiteAid. The weather was unbearable 115 heat index. The RiteAid helicopter was great with ac and gps in it. A real luxury ride. But the logistical planning of this event was more then time consuming. It absorbed my life the last 2 months between fundraising, media, planning etc... But it all worked out. Originally I had only wanted to do 57 coasters but it just kept getting bigger. For those of you looking for the parks it was. Busch Gardens, Kings Dominion, Six Flags America, Six Flags Great Adventure, Seaside both piers, Ocean City where the record was tied and broken. Then the second pier at Ocean City. Back to Harrisburg to sleep for two hours, then to Williams Grove, Dorney Park, Knoebels and finally Hersheypark. If anyone would like more specific info please email me and Ill try to help . and for those who want to help the kids you can email me for the address for the Childrens Miracle Network. My happiest time was having my daughter around to ride the last rides with me. You know she was sick once and having other families of sick and cured children stop us in the parks to thank us.
Hope this answers some questions.
Sincerely
Phil
