Pattern of CF coasters--Will MA follow the leader?

I know this may be a little son, but the announcements of the 2002 Cedar Fair coasters has got me thinking.

Two hypers, both lauched. One is a hyper-twisting impulse, the other is a hydraulically(?) lauched sit-down. Both are built by Intamin, and they both have reasonably short layouts.

There seems to be some kind of pattern between these two parks. Now, Michigan's Adventure was said to have be scheduled to have a new coaster addition, but it was pushed off by a year to get it in 2003. I think this may have been a good business decision because CF would have had 3 separate major construction projects in the same year, and the funds were already being stretched, it would have been too much of an undertaking.

What I want to know is if you think that Michigan's Adventure's new coaster is such an undertaking that it's expense had to be pushed back a year. Will it be an Intamin, possibly launched with a short/long layout, or a normal ole hyper like a S:ROS. Will they "follow the leader," or do you think it will be some kind of other company?

Tell me what you think...

I think MA will get something nice and big from CF, seeing as how they need to establish themself with a nice nig steel coaster.  Whatever CF gives to MA will be welcome!

I think it will most likely be an "old fashioned hyper" with a lift, since every other Cedar Fair park besides Knotts has one.

If KBF followed the "pattern" of CF buyouts, it would have received an Out-&-Back Hyper first, not an S&S Triple Turbo Drop and a troublesome Intamin boat ride.

I don't really think they have any patterns in the selection of rides. CF puts new stuff where it will fit (footprint) and where needed. (depending on current ride collection)

BTW, if S:ROS is a "normal ole hyper," I would LOVE for California to get something "normal and old!"

You took the words right out of my mouth, Soggy. KBF really doesnt have the room for LARGE rides. They need to fit attractions into relatively small spaces. It is a wonder how they have fit as much as they have, but I still see places where they can expand. Each park is allotted a piece of the budget based on both park needs AND park popularity. Cedar Point will ALWAYS get priority #1 because it is by FAR the most visited park in the chain. Although small, Knotts probably is significantly higher than the others and hasquite a bit of local competition.

But Soggy, you need to factor in things such as zoning laws (Buena Park has none, though) and property size. Knott's has no room for such a thing as an out-n-back hyper-coaster. It'll be like that until they can find a way to expand the park onto adjacent parcels of land that are unused, such as the alligator farm which is currently being used as the storage lot for track. But the staple attraction at all Cedar Fair LP parks is this, as Kinzel mention in a press release -

- Hyper-coaster

- Coasters™ restaurant

- Shoot-the-Chute

- S&S Space Shot -/+ Turbo Drop

Last I'd heard the MA Hyper was still very much on tap in the next year or two. The original owners had been planning to install it for 2002 but CF (and wisely IMO) decided to spend money landscaping and getting park up to par on that end of things before just throwing coasters at the problem ala the way Six Flags operates some of their newer parks.

The original design was supposedly by Morgan but with CF ownership of the park Intamin would be a fair enough bet as well. One things for certain, the amount of land won't be an issue at MA, they can put anything they'd like in. Personally, I think the park could use a Hyper with a Twister style to it like SROS @ SFNE or Expedition Ge-Force as Timbers should already more than fill the out and back requirements of any park :-)

The former owner wanted to build a steel coaster... not Cedar Fair. The company isn't bound to building anything or sticking to any former plan. All bets are off.

First and foremost is a park makeover, which we know they're getting. Based on attendance in '02, they can decide at that point if a new ride makes sense and they can quickly pay it off.

But who knows what that might be. I would expect to see a Boomerang before a hypercoaster. Sure, that would suck to most of us, but think like you own the park and it makes perfect sense.

No, LoadedG, you are absolutely wrong. Knotts attendance is actually greater than Cedar Point's attendance.

Knotts annual attendance: 3.6 million
Cedar Point: 3.3 million

Where are you getting your facts from?

Of course, this is one case where I would love for the leader to follow the example of the new park in the chain (cough**CCI**cough)!

Speedrider3, maybe he is comparing month by month. Knotts is open a lot longer than the point.

Yeah, Knott's gets 3.6 million a year, Cedar Point gets 3.3 million a summer.

Jeff said it pretty well.  MA will get what fits best for them according to their attendance of next year, money, space, etc.

To quote MacKenzie

However, although it might be in the five-year plan, a new 210-foot steel roller coaster planned by Roger Jourden before he sold the park will not be built for 2002, MacKenzie said.

Unless Boomerangs are now 210-feet tall, I'd say that was hinting at a hyper.

Speedrider3, I did not do any actual research as to the numbers, which is why I said "probably".

My point was that Cedar Point AND Knotts are the top dogs in the chain and will get first crack at budgetary expenditures. They are the bread and butter that helps pay for the other parks improvements.

That's all.

I suspect MA will probably get an SLC or a Boomerang as Jeff said...see how attendance figures do with a new steel and the makeover, then see if a big steelie makes sense.  (Who knows, maybe pick up a used steel ride - read, KC from PKI, but I suspect one with inversions since you have to round out the park).  EVERY park should have an S&S, even if just an old-fashioned Double-Shot...Checketts RULES!

I have to agree with Jeff on this one here.  A boomerang or some other inexpensive coaster seems logical.  Maybe they could pick up SFoG's Viper aka Tidal Wave!

On a side note, some Milwaukee business is seriously considering starting up ferry service across the lake again from Milwaukee to Muskegon.  If they do that, you might see alot of Milwaukee people at MA with the proper marketing!

Cheers,

Perhaps an Impulse? I can't imagine anyone building a regualar boomerang with all the other choices out there today.

Kick The Sky, whole I agree that SFoG's Viper would be a good selection, I'm pretty sure it's staying in the SF family...the theming elements for Viper (soda machines, signage, etc.) were ALL being saved/shipped "somewhere" for future installation.  Besides, MIA is too far away for me...

You're missing my point... it may never be built. It would be a bad PR move to say that it would never be built. Right now, I really don't think that little park could sustain a $15+ million ride. If Cedar Point wasn't already building one, I could see them getting an impulse before a traditional hyper.

We'll see how this year goes, especially in the second quarter, then we can make better educated guesses about what the park could build.
