Old trail dumps

I noticed you can go back a long way in archives. Why not dump anything over a year old to save space?

Just a thought

I have 40 gigs of space. It's not an issue. Bandwidth is an issue.

If I remember right, this site is connected to the outside world on a T1. The issue lies in the fact that it costs big money to server up this much data on a connection like that.

The act of getting a page from the server to you uses bandwidth. That costs money. The act of storing a page on the server doesn't cost anything, because I'm not restricted by the amount of space used on the hard drive.

True.... But having old data on the server, and people visiting all old data uses bandwidth.

It's important to have the "old" data. We could keep from wasting disk space (and other people's time) if we bothered to look back and see if something has been discussed before we post a new topic about it. This will, in turn, reduce bandwidth as well because you have one person looking up an old topic rather than multiple persons posting responses to an old question... Not to mention all the smarty-pantses who will undoubtedly bring up the fact that you should use the search function to look up said old topics (which you would be unable to do if the "old" data was deleted).
Of course we wouldn't need to search for those old topics if we had that FAQ... :^)
