Next forum testing

OK, so this ended up being a lot easier than I expected, or I'm just better at this now that I don't have to do it in my day job. I merged in the image uploading and it's running on the test site. Please try to break it.

I shared a couple photos with some comments. I wish I paid more attention to the account creation though. Is it possible to change my display name? I’m not seeing it in the settings.

Jeff's avatar

No, display names have never been changeable.

I created it from my Google account to be quick and didn’t consider that.

It auto-fills the name if Google gives it, but you can still edit it before you submit.

I just messed around with it on iOS, worked like a champ, to my surprise.

I did some icon refreshing, including replacing all of the post tools (link, reply, quote, etc.) with icons. Also the top of the page tools. Curious to know what you think.

Also, don't un-vote for things at the moment. It will erase your other votes. I need a little time before I can move that fix here.

OK, that new version is here now, thus the gratuitous icons. It's also safe to un-vote.

You'll noticed next to the topic title at the top of the page that the subscribe and favorite buttons have been turned into smaller icons. You'll also find a setting in your profile that was automatically checked and says, "Automatically follow topics that you reply to." That means anything you reply to (or start) will make you subscribed to it. What that means is that you'll find a notification indicating that it was updated. Notifications are under the bell icon in the upper right.

On both mobile and desktop, the edit box defaults to a super small size and shows a bunch of tags.

Also, it took a while for the scroll bar to show up when I loaded this page.

Hobbes: "What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do?"
Calvin: "If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun."

Also, when I try to edit and hit submit, sometimes I get "can't make an empty post" and the text field goes blank.

You've got something wrong or not updated with your phone, or something is aggressively caching old files on your network. Shift-refresh on desktop. Not sure what to do about your phone. I test on my iPad, everything is working.

Not sure if this is new or not, but the "edit post" feature is not working correctly. I just made a post and wanted to change a "there" to a "their", but when I click on the edit post button it looks like this:

And I just now saw that Andy just made the same comment, sorry. That was from my laptop, using Chrome.

Looks like there was a weird race condition for the edit page when localizing. Should be OK now.

Looks good now.

If you're having trouble on an iPhone, use this technique to record your screen, and upload the result to YouTube or somewhere you can share it.

Trying to understand the activity feed. I keep getting new notifications when someone posts or votes up a post, but I’ve unchecked Automatically follow topics that you reply to and confirmed that I haven’t subscribed to any topics. Bug? Or am I missing a setting?

Jeff's avatar

You'll get notifications for people up voting your posts regardless. If you've already subscribed (or auto-subscribed) to a thread, you'll have to unsub from it by either clicking the bell next to the title in the thread (top left) so it's not filled, or under the user menu at the top right, go to subscriptions.

Yep, I'd already unsubscribed from everything:

So you're saying that I should no longer see new post notifications but there's nothing I can do to mute notifications for upvotes to my posts, right?

Jeff's avatar

Correct. Reply to this, I'm gonna unsubscribe and see if I get one.

Reply.

I think I was incorrect, I haven't been getting reply notifications since Friday, which is probably when I disabled all subscriptions. So since then I've just received notifications for vote ups. May I submit a feature request for the option to turn those off as well? :)
