New S&S site... total crap

Jeff's avatar

If the title seems harsh, well, it's meant to be. Check out the new S&S site...

http://www.s-spower.com

Why is it crap? Well, let's start with the 1.2 MB animated GIF (yeah, that's right a GIF) on the home page. Then look around and find more huge unoptimized graphics.

What amateur did this? I sure as hell hope they didn't pay for it, because it's downright bad. I'm lucky, I have a T-1... what would a modem user ever get to see?

I agree, although I did save that Paul Ruben quote that they "flashed" to help teach myself Flash 5. It was a pretty big help.
I'll have to agree with Jeff on this one. My laptop is a 750MHz Pentium III with 512 MB of RAM (not cutting edge anymore, but still respectable), on a T-1 at work, and this site is STILL slow. Ugh.

I have DSL and it still goes slow...even though I only have a 350Mhz P2 with 128MB. :(

That's not Flash... that's a GIF. If it were Flash I wouldn't be ripping on it. (And as an aside, you can't do anything with an .swf file but play it anyway.)

I have to agree too. The site is extremely slow and I have a cable connection and an P4 chip. It also locked my computer up.

...."page can not be displayed"....sounds familiar to those of us who surf from home....;)

I noticed they happen to be their own primary contact, they WERE using the folks from MD for awhile....the name escpaes me right now....

Perhaps they could use a little technical help, but they sure don't seem to think so according to their job opportunities listings....also noticed they've got a Double Shot going into Galaxyland at the West Edmonton Mall....

O...so how come the frames came up when I opened it in Flash? Shouldn't it have just came up as an image?

Heck, even closing the window was slow..........

Beats me. I don't doubt that Flash can export animated GIF's, maybe even read them, but all an animated GIF is is a series of bitmaps, much like the frames of a film. Flash itself is a mass of math and calculations that manipulate curves and shapes.

So, do you reccommend making a 90x35 flash microbutton for my site affiliates?
Site...still...loading. That's pure madness, yo.

Jeff,

Are you related to my Networking/Web Design Professor? I ask this becuase this is exactly what he'll say about a site with either Flash or animated GIF's. He likes to go with the KISS principle... (Keep It Simple Stupid)

After trying to access the site a few times, I think they either took it down or they are updating it becuase it won't work. Any site with a 1.2 MB AniGif is crap though, I agree with that.

9 of 10 problems with websites and large file sizes are related to your connection, NOT the computer itself....I lose my sanity on a daily basis due to users with poor internet connections....

With a dial-up connection at 49,333 and using an IBM 1.8 Ghz Pentium 4 comp, I can't get the site to come up. Pathetic.

You know what is even funnier about this site is the fact that they used Dreamweaver to create the webpage. Dreamweaver is made by the same company as Flash is made by. Go figure. If you that far along why not do right??????

Anyone who's done *any* serious web development (especially those who make our living doing it!) will agree with your professor. Animations and Flash may look pretty, but as far as accessibility goes, they can single-handedly drag a whole site down the crapper. One of my sites registers 30% of it's visitors using Netscape 3.x Gold! You can't imagine what a Flash-based site (or anything made using Macromedia's crappy code) looks like in a browser like that...

Back on topic, S&S would do good to hire someone who knows what they're doing. I'd do it for em - they wouldn't even have to pay me - just put a drop tower in my backyard!

I'm with cdrpointcrazy4. That site didn't go too slow for me, and I'm only using 56k.
