I was just curious what the point of the left column in the forums is, saying if there are new posts. I have yet to find a topic without a new post, even if it has not been touched for over a year.

It works for me. You have to click "Mark old posts read" (or something like that) on the main forum page. Then the next time you visit the site, you can tell which threads have new posts since you last marked.
